According to the chat I had with RAC a few months back – they also won't transport if the car is within 1/4 mile of home. So if you want a free lift to a dealership when car fails in the driveway it's going to be a bit of a push…

The recovery industry relies on a number of exemptions from truck driving regulations. These are ONLY applicable to cars with faults – the driver being incapable for whatever reason immediately turns it into a transport job, not a recovery.

Having read the next post, I should also point out that any car to be recovered needs to be road legal: MOTd, taxed and insured.

I experienced a minor gotcha with my home start insurance when the car was off the road (SORNED) during the pandemic: it turns out that they won't deal with a flat battery in these circumstances.

I was not particularly put out as they had already got me out of trouble on two occasions before I SORNed the car.

Needless to say, I now have a new battery!
