Queen street mill,Burnley- worth a trip

If anyone has a wish to see a well maintained compound mill engine running 300 looms then I heartily recommend Queen street mill, Burnley BB 10 2 HX as an excellent place to visit. They do provide ear defenders for you when in the weaving shed. Well laid out place with free parking .

They have a good tea room and very very reasonable prices both for food and admission.

Go soon as it may close in September 2016 .Visit their web site to check when the engine is running . They are really friendly and helpful.

Be warned however TOM TOM sat nag takes you into the back of beyond en route from Yorkshire. It really is worth the trip. I have no connection with them apart from as a very happy visitor who went with No1 son today.

I too would definitely recommend a visit to Queen Street Mill. It has the complete package – Lancashire boiler, steam engine, line shafting and belts driving some 300 looms and the atmosphere of a working mill (and even a weaver in clogs!)

We just got back from a few days in Lancashire to see Helmshore Mills, Bancroft Mill Engine and Queen Street Mill. Well worth the journey from Hampshire.

Helmshore Mills and Queen Street are still in line for closure by the county council by end of September. I was told that for Queen St. at least, the council are realising that mothballing the site will cost almost as much as keeping it open so there is some hope for the future. With admission to Queen Street a ridiculous £3 (£2 for over 60's) its not surprising the place is losing money!

Helmshore Mills is more of a museum but the waterwheel runs and the process spinning cotton is well explained by the guides who demonstrate the carding and mule spinning machinery.

The Bancroft engine is run by a very friendly volunteer group. It was interesting to compare their Cross Compound with rope drive to the similar sized direct coupled Tandem Compound at Queen Street.

Some good news, it is proposed to re-open the Mill and 2 other Museums.

GREAT . On my 120 mile return visit just before they closed , bought some of their calico cloth and it's EXCELLENT. Can't wait for them to re-open so I can purchase some more and take more pictures of this wonderful mill .
