On some wartime and some post war equipment there was a rough black coating. I don't think it was a paint, possibly some kind of powder coating.

I recently saw it again on an Enigma machine, and it reminded me old equipment I used to have and how durable it was.

Does anyone know what the coating was?

If it's a crackle finish then contact an MG restoration site. This finish was common on MG dashboards and is still available as a spray from a can. It needs to be applied fairly thickly.

last time I used this "Crackle finish paint"…..

was very easy……warm the item up in the oven….wife was out….hahaha…..

spray on the paint (aerosol) and it Crackles in front of ur eyes…..

waited several days before touching the item….

              Harley cast iron cylinder barrels…….

the paint went hard and the heat did not affect the finish,

but they did stink for a while when warming up the engine for the first time…

              easy peasy……..

Not sure I would call it cracked, more like lumpy powder coat

Not sure what they used then but you can get something called "textured metal paint". TA paints Ltd still do it (I'm sure their are other suppliers/manufacturers).

Try the camera restoration world as crackle finish/stove enamel was used on early Leica lenses and parts also other makers such as Taylor, Taylor & Hobson. There were other optical equipement makers who used this too.

German factories used coloured version…take a look at lathesUK site and see the Hommel combined lathe/mill which had yellow/black crackle finish.

I've always known it as "wrinkle finish paint". I recently used it on a headphone amplifier:

I concur it is a form of black crackle paint. I have a 10" Vertex rotary table finished in this stuff. It is a real bugger to brush swarf off.

Should still be able to buy/order it from an authorized Harley Davidson shop, sold in aerosol form.

Not cheap, but the proper stuff.
