I have a couple of questions today regarding the use of different oils I would like to know what kind of oil is recommended for a Colchesrter Bantam lathe and also a Centec 2B Mill, that's the first question the second is about cutting oils, I currently have a drip feed to both machines but eventually i would like to fit a coolant pump to both, its the soluble oil I use but both machines seam to cut better and it seams easier on the machines if I apply normal cutting oil with a brush, so would you pump a different type of oil than the soluble type if so what would you use, thanks in advance.

      Regards Alan.

          Hi Alan,

if your headstock bearings is lubricated with oil, a socalled "hydraulic oil" with an ISO VG of 32 could be used (Shell Tellus, Esso Nuto etc.). I assume you use a "slideway oil" like Shell Tonna (ISO VG 68) on the ways?

          Regards

          Thor

For your pumped cutting fluid, soluble oil is the way, if you use coolant with carbide tooling, you either flood the work, or work it dry, although I some times use the soluble oil undiluted. Ian S C
