I was wondering about the order of machining for the headstock, which has an accurate base keyed into the lathe bed, and accurate spindle direction.

I've seen the big boring machine for accurate leadscrew holes in the lathe bed for the leadscrew and here is the planing machine for the main bed.

I presume they did the base first, used it as a datum, flipped it over then planed the bed as we see here.

What I'm wondering about is the headstock

So you have a lump of cast metal in a general headstock shape

Did they mount the spindle section on a jig and do the base first? Then mount the base and do the spindle boring

Or did the process all revolve around doing the spindle first?

I'm assuming the base first, but I don't know.

I have no idea, but you can bet each opertaion would be done using a jig, possibly on a dedicated machine with bigger company like Drummonds.
