      .

Having (as yet) never done any line boring I found this series of 3 video's by Kieth Fenner most informative for the principles involved.

Anyway, thought I would link here as it may be of interest to others. **LINK**

I do like Kieth's no-nonsense straight talking video style in the productions he does.

I don't think you will need one quite so big even if you do go with that Clarkson Compoundsmile p

Errrrrrrrrrr. I 'might' want to upscale it. cheeky

Talking of Clarkson castings. How much coinage ish are they as I cannot seem to find a price list for them, even on the pdf download.

Not quite sure, they had a few of the smaller ones at Guildford last year and had priced them at just below the similarly sizes Stuart offerings. Not even sure if they have the larger ones available yet but can ask them next week as they are at Guildford show again.

You could also look at the larger marine engines from Reeves and Engineers Emporium have a 2.25bore x 2" stroke "beaver" in both single and compound, I'll send you their catalogue.

There is certainly some impressive stuff in there. smiley

But I think I would also need bigger machine tools for much of it. frown

A great video explaining techniques for line boring, making a boring bar and holding the work by a professional machinist. BUT, like many amateur videos, way too long. The 3 part video could have been condensed to 1. (sorry for being so critical)

I did not watch the entire set this time but did catch one idea that I will try… He wrapped a boring bar in sheet lead to stop it singing. That I am going to try. Many is the time I have hung various bits of material on a bar to try and stop it vibrating. but always out of the work the sheet lead slides in right near the tool.

You learn something every day. Keith's videos are great, not only for the current topic but the little secrets that pop up along the way.

                    Anyway it sure beats Television!

                    Regards

Nick, could you be tempted by this in the future? 17" tall, only casting is the 8" flywheel.

I agree with Paul – far to longwinded video's.

I have used multicore solder coiled round the boring bar. One or two layers depending on space available – works just fine.

Although the video was a little long, I did learn something about boring bars. And the use of lead or solder to stop vibration. Never too old to learn something.

I need to show him how to organise his tools me thinks

Many of the US videos are over-long – much better are the ones by Abom79, which get straight to the point. There are others much more long winded than even this one, with really good content but everything repeated ad nauseam. No names, but the one I have in mind you could brew several cups of a well known brand of tea while waiting to get past the lengthy intro talking.

Still using two I made when had an ML7 23 yrs ago for a specific scary, flimsy expensive job.

26" long bar single point cutter is at front left and has to go all the way through 330mm, start bore 20.1mm opened out to 23mm. Have to keep opening up and sending down, fingers holding and supporting the bar flexing/chaffing.

Nothings going to be rigid that length at that diameter.
