Have you tried a 1.5V non-rechargeable cell?  Your rechargeable cell may not provide sufficient voltage to properly operate the lights.

I note your initial post indicated a cell voltage more akin to a lithium cell or 3 x 1.5V cells as a battery.  Which is it?

Is there any provision for an alternative power supply?

With the correct voltage, the momentary button likely changes the mode of operation (on continuously, short or long flashing plus possibly some others).

Just to add to the information. My solar powered LED string is DEFINITELY switched on and off by the Solar panel. No ifs or buts, no LDRs or phototransistors etc.

1.2 volts (rechargable cell) is not enough to light a LED. The drive circuit will have a capacitive voltage doubler or similar.

Thanks Robert, I am guessing that something on the circuit board has stopped working such that the on/off switch latching circuit is not working. Its a case of ditching that bit and just saving the string of lights in the come in handy/useless bits box.
