today must be one of my proudest days since getting married, after makeing the slide valves and a lil bit of tinkering my little tich burst in to life and run sweet, i even hooked up to my carrige sat her on the 2.5 meters of track in my living room connected the air and took a seat opened the valve and there i was at the other end of the track

to say im proud would be a true understatment i had a grin from ear to ear so much so it hurt

anyways thats my little story for today

          Hi MB1 ,

There is always something magic about the moment when something that you've made yourself comes to life for the first time .

              Really well done.

Wait until you have the fun of getting her (him?) up in steam; I enjoy steaming my little tich more than the larger ones, but it DID take some practice to get ok with the firing!

I use a little teaspoon, so if you have any old ones kicking around, keep at least one.

What a great story to read in these days of tales of doom and gloom – a small bit of joy and a true victory for the hard work involved

                Well done!

I have to admit that the joy of making something that works, no matter how small, is one of the reasons for me being in this hobby. The first thing I made, or rather two things because I can't remember which was first, was making a countersink and a 60° screwcutting tool from silver steel. Nothing much, I know, but from little acorns do big oak trees grow.

And recently, as of last Sunday, the lathe got me out of a hole. I dismantled a dripping tap to find that the washer was crumbling away so badly that it would not have worked if I put it back in the tap. Of course, Sod's Law intervened and the only spare washer I had was too big, and the local hardware shop was closed. So I mounted the overlarge washer in the lathe and turned it down. Job done.

Now I could not have done that before I got a lathe, well, not without a great deal of difficulty.

                      Regards,

                      Peter G. Shaw

You would find away, I,v done it by mounting a hand drill in a vice and using tha as a lathe. I have heard of the same system being used to build a little oscillator steam engine. Ian S C

                              Hi Peter

Yes with a workshop, and especially with a lathe, you can fix practically anything. The only trouble is that if (when?) the word gets out other folk expect you to fix their "everything". They also seem to have very little idea of the time taken in sorting out their " Could you just have a look at this little job when you have a moment" !

I find taking a long time to find that moment works with persistant offenders!

I agree with Peter – nothing equals the joy of seeing what were lumps of metal come together and then breathing life into them.

                                Well done Michael

(And how do I persuade my wife to let me have atrack in the living room? She was horrified when the chassis of my electric powered shunter shot across the floor and hit the fire[place)

Behind the settee? and aim in a different direction?

Well done getting the Tich motoring. I have to get mine boiler tested ( given to me by My Generous Uncle, god bless him ) mind you he wants to monitor my driving it on the club track !

This all puts off working on Speedy again but…. got to have an aim in life.

NJH never tell people you do wood turning, the number of jobs that turn up for " when you've got a minute" is intersting. Mind you I will enjoy the bottle of wine for the draw knobs, and it was a tricky little thing to hold which makes it more "exciting"wink

My neighbour is a woodturner and we get various bit from him for fire lighting. We call them " Dave's heroic failures"!

Michael – to get back on thread – very well done with your project – you must be very chuffed! I assume your "Oh I love her…." comment applies to your wife's encouraging attitude and not little Titch? – although maybe this falls into the "I couldn't possibly say" category !
