I watch prices of machines I own – probably like quite a few on here. Yesterday a friend rang up and I complimented him on the price he paid for his 2A recently.

His response was that, while the price was right, he wished he had the same travels as the one currently on epay for £800 BIN. looking at it closely, I see the seller has (deliberately?) overstated the travels – the z axis by some 80%!

Not the easiest thing to return, after one finds out the expected long travel is not over 50% longer than actual and vertical traverse is only 6”, not 11”.

Something seriously amiss as my 2B only has 9 1/2” vertical travel.

Do members find this sort of thing regularly, with auction hype?

          Probably just an “innocent typo”

… much like misrepresenting ebay as “epay”

I am quite the reverse – If I need it, it is not silly bad value and I can afford it, it gets bought – and after that the price is forgotten – especially in the case of things bought to do one job – any use after that is a bonus!

The only problem is when 'if I need it' morphs into 'I want it'

Like three innocent typos? ‘Epay’, ‘goggle’ and others are not typos on my part. Less likely to come up on search engines. Why advertise them for free? ‘Ban good’ could be another.

Spoonerisms and Malopropisms have been around for a long time, but mine are usually not in error.🙂

Fairly clearly this seller has not really used that particular machine or he would know the axes travel was far less than he is quoting?

Hi NDIY, you have already advertised a website, and everyone knows which one you mean, without searching the one you have mentioned.

                Regards Nick.

On the other hand, if you dislike certain websites, why avoid using their proper names, as you are preventing search engines from linking to your criticisms…?

Sometimes people haven't measured the thing (lets hope they do actually own the thing they are advertising) and don't want to go out to the shed or are at work so they guess or look for something on the internet that is also wrong.

Often see it with weights too "How am I going to move this 600lb Myford?" query.
I recently got a machine in parts form so it was easy to weight all the bits. I haven't weighed the plastic handles yet but the difference between the sum of the parts and the manufacturer's handbook weight is about 400lb. Either they massively reduced the thickness of the castings for later models or more likely in the days before trading standards they just put in a figure that looked good.

This guys a trader looking at the feedback, his maths should be better, I make 6+ riser 4=10 not 11.

I've seen Centec 2's listed as 2A's and 2B's listed as 2A's over the years, I blame cutting and pasting + it'll do or Juggard.

To be fair about Myfords the book weight for a Super 7 with motor is a bit under 250 lb and the standard cabinet adds around 125 lb or so. So 400 lb odd for the complete lathe and stand isn't an unreasonable round number estimate. Throw in quick mis-understanding of the difference between a complete lathe on a stand and a bare machine for bench mounting and its pretty easy to see how folk get "call it 600 lb odd" in round numbers.

An ML7 is rather lighter, maybe 3/4 the weight or a little less.

Of course anything as intrinsically unbalanced as a lathe weighs heavier that it really is due to the tendency for gravitationally assisted escape and relocation!

I remember many, many years ago teenagers with old banger's used to fit CB radios, they were all dead clever and used secret codes such as 'Brown Bottles' meaning beer, or 'square wheels' meaning parked up there were a lot more of these very clever codes in use and all providing a great laugh to the cop that was monitoring the channels for more serious activity taking place on the radios. Usually the criminals using CB didn't use any coding at all.

I have come across several incidents where the seller is selling after a death and have NO IDEA what their selling, often stating that it is in good order or so, only for it to become obvious that it's also pointless to ask questions as they don't know anything about it !!! Any parts missing ? And poor pictures. None of it done to deliberatly defraud. Noel

It matters not a jot about the riser – the vertical travel is still 6”. The slide will contact the horizontal spindle housing? That or the dovetails would not be long enough to add 4” to the original figure.🙂

Long travel is more than I can achieve with my 2B. Apparently the seller is aware that these claims are wrong. If I had got caught by that description, I would take him to the small claims court – and win.
