Hi, thanks for letting me join the forum, 40 plus years ago i was an apprentice engineer and now i want to get back to making things. My son (10 years old) and I have quite a bit of mamod etc and looking to go to a next step of making ‘steam things’!

I will look forward to seeking your collective wisdom and hearing advice from folk who have probably made more mistakes than I’ve had hot dinners.

My son and I are members of Buxton Model engineers, so anyone else in the area I’l love to hear form you.

      many thanks

      Andy

Hello Andy, I’m over at Brown Edge.
Do Buxton Model Engineers still meet anywhere?
I did see a piece in The Advertiser a while ago, but didn’t get around to making contact, partly because they used to meet in the evening at The Old Hall, and we eat at odd hours, precluding my attendance.

Tea/coffee can be provided is you’re ever up our end of town; N.B. my workshop is unheated.
I don’t specifically make any models, but do mangle various bits of metal for various purposes.

Facebook Here if you use it; there’s a couple of engineering related photo albums, but mainly wildlife/landscape.

Hi welcome to the forum. Have a look on this web site   www.steves-workshop.co.uk  and mark 1 simple project. It has all the information from making a working engine the boiler etc. I made one and incorporated a small generator and a miniature street lamp. My video of finished model.   https://youtu.be/rsbpTT5UJvI

Hi, yes, it is a bit of a fight against the screen but if he sees it happening then he is more likely to join in and hopefully start the curiosity of tinkering!

                Hi Bill,

The Buxton Model Engineers meet on first Thursday of the month at 8pm, we’re now meeting at the Cheshire Cheese. They also meet on zoom at 8pm on the third Thursday evening.

I’ve sent you a Facebook friend request – will be good to get to know more model engineers in the town

                Andy

Hi David, thanks for the suggestion of Steve’s workshop – that is just the sort of information I’m looking for, something simple to get me started.

                  Thanks

                  Andy

Welcome to the party Andy & son, I started with a small SEL steam engine, spent my whole life in engineering and now rebuilding a BR 9F in 5″. Some times pass through Buxton on my way to the Wirral. For a boiler a piece of 63mm copper tube will do, I have some, want a bit ? Being a member of a club or society is the best way to make progress and also meet like minded souls. Best wishes. Noel.

Don’t rush it.  I introduced a nephew to computing when he was 10. Seven years later, the seed germinated, and now he controls mobile phone networks.  Ditto his little brother who 3D prints stuff.  My son has a practical job and has no interest in hands-on hobbies.  He reads, games and socialises during his spare time.

                        Welcome!

Splendid that you are interesting your son in practical things.

He will find such skills very useful in later life.

Encourage him to read these posts along with you, as part of his learning.
