I am looking to purchase some full form threading inserts from APT to cut a normal right hand thread.  The tool holders come in left hand and right hand and the inserts don’t seem to specify which tool holder I need.  Is it as simple as a right hand thread insert needs a right hand tool holder and a left needs a left hand which seem more available? Some of the inserts are labelled left hand and some in the description have left hand so cutting from tailstock towards chuck to cut a right hand thread what do I need?  Any clarification gratefully received.

Both SER and SEL will cut right hand threads but the SEL are for when the tool is mounted behind the work and cutting away from the chuck. So for conventional cutting with the tool at the front and moving towards the chuck you want their SER holders. Same as you would use a RH cutting tool to turn tHE od FROM END TO CHUCK.

This is as good a guide to laydown threading as any:

          https://fenntool.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/downloads-Seco-Threading_2016.pdf

It tells you what the holder and insert codes mean.

It has pictures explaining the words it uses.

It has more pictures and words describing how each combination of insert and holder can be used.

If Seco is not brand to your taste (some like tea; some like coffee), every major insert manufacturer has a similar document in their technical library.

The chances are that JB Cutting Tools might have a holder suitable for the inserts that you have.

A Right hand holder will be intended for cutting towards the chuck.  A Left hand one for cutting away from the chuck.

Many thanks as ever for the replies.  Most helpful in sorting out the future purchases.
