I have this diamond grinding wheel and I want to mount it on a grinder that has no wheel cover. I assume it should be safe, since it is a metal wheel. Buy I have just one doubt. How thick is that material that contains the diamond stones? Is it only 1-2mm? Or the last 10mm of the diameter? Because in the last case in theory that diamond mix material could not break?

The diamonds in those kind of wheels are usually just in a thin layer plated onto the core – I think the numbers are telling you that the coated area extends back 10mm from the edge of the 10mm wide wheel, and the coarseness is ’80grit’.

The risk you need to guard against is that some object falls against or is otherwise ‘picked up’ by the wheel and flung out at you.

That’s an electroplated wheel – no chance of that bursting. The coating is very thin. Diamond wire sawing wire for cutting concrete is much thicker plated and that’s only about 1/2mm or so.

How much will it last if it is so thin? I want to use it to make lathe tools from 10mm HSS blanks. (I know that diamonds are not recommended for HSS but I’ll try not to heat it too much)

Not long at bench grinder speeds. Heat is the killer of diamonds.

I want to put it to a 400rpm 150W motor. I like it because is very quiet.

Should be ok for that. Will be pretty slow at grinding though.

Only way to find put is try it. I use brake cleaner for a coolant but it makes your fingers black.

sorry Sonic but why are you using a grinding medium thats completely useless for what you want to achieve

I want a quiet grinder that makes no dust. I already have a nice and quiet motor. So I was thinking that an diamond disc would solve the dust issue.

A CBN wheel is more suitable for HSS. But I think those need the cover since the CBN is much thicker than these diamond wheels.

You won’t need to guard a CBN wheel at 400rpm for bursting purposes.

I cut my HSS blanks using the angle grinder and form them roughly using the angle grinder. The bench grinder white stone is used for a more precise form. Finally the cutting edges are ground using the diamond wheel that is 1000 grid or better, don’t know it any more.
