A short video of Bob Reeve's differential demonstrator using shop-made bevel gears as described in his recent articles in Model Engineers' Workshop.

              Very nice.

But I didn't get the point being demonstrated by engagement of the wooden wheels. I hope it's not obvious to everyone bar me !

The wooden wheel device was invented by Dennis Motors as a very cheap way of locking the diff so both wheels were constantly driven.

Going by the perceived passage of the bars drawn on the wooden wheels, I guess that's intended to demonstrate the diff's capability to cope with the tyred wheels running at different speeds – though I didn't readily see how that was achieved…

                  blush

Ah, it must be the little cuboidal gearbox between the wooden wheels !

So was this wooden wheel device ever fitted to a vehicle? (or anything else?)

Might be very cheap but does not look to be very practical on a road vehicle

I'm assuming you meant the Dennis motor company

… and I am assuming that the wooden wheel arrangement is simply a ‘Rolling Road’ for the purposes of demonstration.

The wooden wheels are geared (with conventional spur gears) to move at a 2:1 speed ratio to simulate driving in a tight circle.
