Any info about what machine this slotting head is for?

Hi,

First post.

I have recently acquired a manual slotting head that I am refurbishing (see attached) which has a mounting bracket with a 76mm bore and a brass locking clamp, does anybody know what machine this was meant to be used on?

Looks very much like a shop/home build. certainly not a commercial built job.

I agree with Chris … so the answer is:

Any machine that you can reasonably fit it on.

I’m sure the maker had a specific machine in mind; but we could be guessing forever.

It could even be made to clamp on the overarm of a small horizontal mill, of which there would be many to choose from. Looks like it could make a handy addition to the cross slide of a lathe so you could hold the job in the lathe chuck, index it via the changegears and then cut your slots, splines, gear teeth, graduations or whatever with the device.

I think Hopper has likely guessed the correct use.

Assuming the ring of cap head bolts shown on the collar attach to the main slotting head plate. This means that when the collar mounts onto a shaft which is horizontal the action of the slotting head would be vertical.

So a likely candidate would be a horizontal milling machine with a 3” diameter bar.

The size is correct for a Drummond Round Bed (model A), but as has been suggested probably home made.

If I had more time I might be tempted to look through Edgar T Westbury's articles in ME from the start of the second World War on capstan and turret lathes, but tempus fugit I'm afraid!
