I bought one of these when they were about a fiver.

      **LINK**

I thought it may come in handy at the time and it looked kind of neat. I never used it though so I put it away somewhere “safe”. I’ve now decided it would come in handy to check the angle on some of my wood turning tools. Trouble is I’ve forgotten where “safe” is! Any ideas? frown

And I bet that while looking for it you will find all manor of things that you forgot you had and will start playing with them and forget what you was looking for in the first place

It will be in the very last place you think of looking. How about in an envelope/brown paper in a box in a drawer under the mill/lathe or cupboard on the wall.

Top left drawer of your cabinet next to the box of stuff you put for safe keeping,

That's where I found my tiny precision square that I was convinced I had lent out and forgotten about!

That's easy! Buy a new one and you'll find the original in no time. At least, that's what happened to me when I "stored" my thread gauge.

Well, its always the last place you look – – – unless you go on looking after you have found it!

                    Should I leave now???

                      Try the freezer!

At least that’s where a friend found her specs after weeks of unsuccessful searching and buying a cheapo pair.

Or try online. Click on the link, click on the picture, print and cut out…

Ideally take your time over this, perhaps paste it to some card or use it as a template to cut one out of aluminium sheet. Stamp on the numbers and finally polish it. Almost certainly the one you bought will be found lurking just behind the metal polish devil

If it were me, I would probably have put it where I keep my lathe centre gage tool for threading; because they look alike.

It may not be that you can't see it, just that you don't.

I've certainly had things that remained hidden in plain sight.

I've known people at work who could do that… angel

Edit. this bit of the post disappeared when a tracking thing popped up. huuummmm ??

This is one bit of kit that I don't loose…………to often. I do know that the angle thing has lasted out longer than who knows how many digital calipers and used as much as most of them. If it died, or hid itself, I would soon be out getting another.

                                    Edit over. lol

Do people have a load of broken digital calipers lying around, that hinder finding the one that does work?

                                      So no, not me.

I'll keep one whose fine precision is suspect (currently an old Aldi one) for rough work and to avoid exposing a good one to very dirty conditions, but as soon as it becomes untrustworthy for that, out it goes.

On a serious note, I suspect this forum's members typically have a much higher number of items that need to be kept track of than the average person not engaged in a tool-rich avocation of some kind.

A second point: beware of the well-intentioned impulse to "rationalise" your workshop and move things from where they've been for a long time into more logical or more convenient places. I've lost count of the number of times I've moved a couple of items from their accustomed places during a tidy-up and the items have from that point on effectively disappeared from the face of the earth. There is such a thing as being too organised.

It should be with your HSS bits, ready for grinding a special cutter. I try to hang things like that on a hook, nail, screw, etc, if they are likely to get lost… then forget to look above eye level.smiley

I have a drawer for measuring stuff, another for drills, another for the mill stuff and another for the lathe stuff so when I loose stuff, it's where it should be, on the bench, or wherever you kicked it to just after it fell on the floor or in the swarf bin that you just took to the tip

Label a drawer “Safe Place” and put all the things that need a safe place in it. You could also have a secret drawer label.

Mike , my special drawer is called a workshop and it’s full. it’s all important stuff and carefully stored, the trouble is I can’t get the door open as it’s crammed full. I’m too afraid of throwing stuff out so I can get in, cos I know for certain I’ll need it next week. The special drawer is furthest from the door. I started filling it 20 yqars ago and it just overflowed……🙄🤪.

Try looking in the shed where you keep the large lumpe of junk important odd sized and shaped lumps of useful metal just waiting for a use……..

by the way, Yesterday i just used a piece of stainless I got from a scrap shop fitting obtained in the late 80’s. It was perfect………..had to shape it with the workmate in the garden once I’d levered the hacksaw out……
