Hi chaps, I purchased a little Amolco bench top milling machine as a stand in for a time. I know that the taper is mt2. But before I start hitting things with hammers to get the chuck out, is there a drewbar. I have taken the top of the mill off, but all I can see is a rod and nut which looks like it’s holding the pulleys in place. I don’t want to start taking things apart if I don’t need to, so I am asking here. Thanks
There should be a drawbar but if a drilling chuck is fitted it may not be present. If you can pass a rod down from the spindle top it's missing. You don't need anything fancy, just a bit of studding will do.
I think the intention with these is that you would use your trusty Myford 2MT collet set, hence the presence of the threaded nose for a Myford collet retainer.
Otherwise, a bit of threaded studding without the lid on, as John suggested…..
If I remember aright, I didn't need to leave the lid off with the drawbar. At that time I didn't have Myford pattern collets so I bought a Posilock – type chuck. That was a mistake, that and a vice ate too much daylight. Myford collets are stupidly expensive even if you can find them, ordinary MT2 finger collets are probably best, with a drawbar. Somewhere on here I posted some details of mods I made to extend the column height.
Thanks chaps, I did find the drawbar, and ordered a new mt2 collect chuck with collets. I only need to do a small bit of one off milling. The rest I do on a cnc mill. Thanks for your help.
I do nicely with an MT2 ER25 collett chuck , it does reduce the available height a bit but I can live with that. Locking the motions not in use can be a pain because they are all allen screws A mod to a more convenient handle or knob may worth the trouble particularly on the vertical slide.
