      Hi,

If anyone uses, or has any info on the setting up and use of and Acrogrip 5C collet holder for the M300 lathe I would be extremely interested.

      Many thanks

      Lee

I know it a bit of a late reply, but I do have the original documentation that came with the Acrogrip 5C collet closer that came with the Harrison M250 that I have. As far as I know the closer part is the same for both lathes but the headstock mount is different.

I was Googling ‘Acrogrip’ when I found this thread.

I also found another product called Acro-grip (used in gymnasia) and these weirdly expensive, ‘carefully selected’ but ordinary looking pliers.

          Hi Ian,

          Many thanks for your reply.

I have managed to acquire one recently, complete with the fitting for the M300.

The fitting is quite simple and easily made if you actually manage to find out what it looks like!

In the M300 it is fixed to the lathe by a large plate attached to the back of the headstock. Whilst pondering how i was going to get the necessary holes drilled and tapped I realised that those fixing holes already exist, just blanked off with grub screws.

However I am sure you are right in that the main assembly is totally separate and almost certainly works the same way, so I would be very interested in any info that you have on the device itself.

Mine could do with a good clean but I have resisted the temptation to take it apart until I am 100% sure that I can get it back together.

I’m not sure how to get the info from yourself – I must be able to PM you with details if I can work out the way to do that.

Many thanks again for the message – I’m sure we will be in touch again.

          Kind regards

          Lee

Hi Lee, I have an Acrogrip quick lever 5c collet chuck for my Emcomat 20 lathe, also missing the mounting bracket to the back of the headstock, and would very much like to find a photo of what the Acrogrip bracket should look like so I can make up similar one. Mine was made by AcroVu of Milton Keynes in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. Have you made any progress with your search? The company is now called Hydrafeed still in Milton Keynes. I am awaiting further info from them and if I get anything from them I will let you know. Adam

The bracket mounts to the back of my headstock body into a single M16 threaded socket which is about 80mm away from the centre-line of the spindle and I am wondering if the original bracket would have been a straight bar/box section pinned to the end of the lever or have more of a curved profile….

I believe in their day Acrogrip quick lever collet chucks were reassuringly expensive and it would be nice to make a bracket that looks similar to original

Pictures below are of the Acrogrip bracketry on my M250. I’m not sure but I think the boss welded to the plate is actually a very stiff ball joint which allows some height and position adjustment to accept clevis part of the closer.

I still have the lathe but not the 5C collets and Acrogrip.

                    Hi everyone,

The info regarding the use on the 250 was very useful and directly applies to the 300.

The photo of the backplate in Ian’s post is correct for the M300 – even the plate mounting holes on the headstock were drilled and tapped M5 and filled with a grub screw to keep out the dirt.

A YouTube video was made by Joe Pie some time ago as he has a Colchester lathe with said collet closer. His rattled and he cured it with spacing washers and some adjustment and is worth a look.

Thank you gentlemen for all your help – much appreciated.

                    Lee
