Having just bought this ,found it wanting and put it up for sale ! Its a smashing little lathe ,small enough to use on my narrowboat! But as soon as I turned the saddle it was slipping over the leadscrew..Now Ive looked further into it ,its the leadscrew which is beding away in the middle..There appears to be a support underneath about 2 inches to headstock side but obviously its not doing much..I suppose I could drill a hole in the apron and make a piece of thread fixed underneath but would it be strong enough. Even on MEW site a Pools special expert might be hard to find!
I have now ordered a Chester mini lathe so can at least make something for it..meeeow

          Send it back.

Not fit for purpose, invoke the distance selling regulations.

Just found simething on hobbymachinists forum where someone has bought one and found it had a tight spot hakf way along the leadscrew ,same as mine but mine then slips..It works ok if Ipush the leadscrew up whist winding it..

I guess yours is the 3" Special as it has a single sided feed nut. The 4" Special I had many years back had a proper two part nut which, as I understand things, was the case with all the Pools lathes except the 3".

The 3" Special is actually a re-badged RandA so searching under that name may turn up more info. Normally the single sided feed nut configuration has a fairly long, almost half round, shoe beneath and close to the leadscrew to support it against the pressure keeping the nut engaged. This system can work fine, Colchester and Kerry were two makes that I know from experience made effective use of it. Theoretically the shoe can collect oil helping to keep the screw lubricated. It can also collect debris helping to wear it out. Given the sketchy, open, nature of the apron I'd venture to suggest that the latter is the case with your machine. Easily remidied by making a new one. This machine requires the leadscrew to do double duty as a feed rack in addition to its normal job. The feed pinion causes extra wear which not only reduces the engagement between leadscrew and nut but also promotes more rapid wear of the nut.

Actually its the whole arm that needs replacing..It does have a wobble though I wonder
if I can make a new pin or whatever it rotates on..If not it s going back for sale Ady..I have 16 mil scale engines to put together,a box of Hemmings castings etc and I d rather do those..

You need to get in touch with Slack and Parr at Kegworth in Leicestershire, they used to make these for Pooles and are still in business.

Don't think you will get much help though as they are virtually an offshoot of Rolls Royce Aero these days.

                                Could be a bit pricey!
I think it s going for sale again, someone might give me something for it..just hope its money..I d rather have simething like this for small bits than a mini chinese lathe but there s an old very good Drummond hiding under the bed waiting for its workshop and I m not starting a museum..
Thank you for your help..very interesting

I had the 4inch version many years ago and apart from repairing some broken gears on it did a great deal of work with it on my sprint motorbikes etc.

I made another nut for the lead screw out of cast iron before the original wore out completely.

£20 was given for it in about 1970 off a fellow bike enthusiast who had a jobbing machine shop near Bradford.

It did me well until I could afford an old Super 7 many years later.
