Somebody asked my if I want to buy this grinding machine. It looks quite interesting. He asked me for a price but I hesitated to give an answer. It is made by Deckel so it could be quite expensive but also without all accessories is just a glorified grinder. The machine is close to me so I could go to see it. It seems that it was the source of multiple clones made by various manufacturers.

Does it make sense to have such a grinder? I’m sure in my case it will be cheaper just to throw away worn out tools and buy new ones. But is there something interesting that you could do with it besider sharpening drilling bits and milling cutters?

Often referred to as a D bit grinder.

          Blondihacks has one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLRg24LrcJw&pp=ygUMRGJpdCBncmluZGVy

          as does Stefan Gotteswinter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qHchpQeuho&pp=ygUMRGJpdCBncmluZGVy

I know that Blondihacks has one. She also mentioned in a video that she is barely using it.

A disadvantage is that it can’t ground end mills. Without additional DIY attachments. That would be the only real use case for me. Because the HSS lathe tools I can ground them by hand.

I have one of those. Mine has dual dials (metric/inch) and I;ve never seen another that does.

I use mine primarily for grinding small carbide lathe tools from 6mm carbide endmills.

As implied by Dave above they and their eastern clones each use proprietary collets. As often the case it depends what you do how much you might use it. With the growing popularity of mini CNC mill/engravers like the 3018 and 3020 small V-bit sharpening has more interest.
I think I noticed the ‘next issue’ advert in the latest ME&W includes a  sharpener probably based on the universal U2 heads readily available on ebay etc.

These things can do an awful lot, you just need the correct accessories.  This is true of all the tool and cutter grinders (Clarkson, KO Lee, etc). You’ve got the universal head so that’s a good start.  With that, you can sharpen the teeth of end mills, drills and grind D-Bits and a fair bit else besides.

This one is the original article (as opposed to the Chinese clones), so it should be pretty precise.

One thing you might consider, were you to buy it, is taking a look on AliExpress.

The mill flute sharpening attachment and lathe tool grinding attachment for the Chinese U2/U3 clones are available pretty cheap and I think might be out-of-the-box compatible, or if not out-of-the-box compatible, compatible with some work.

I managed to snag a Chinese clone version for £100, that had been sitting unused for a fair old time, and I need to clean it up and get it working.  I’ll use it mainly for sharpening ends mill teeth, and when I get round to buying the mill flute sharpening attachment, mill flutes, too. Maybe I’ll knock up some D-Bits or pyramid cutters at some point.

Another vote to buy it if the price is not ridiculous. Out of three T&C grinders in my workshop my GH Alexander version of the Deckel single lip grinder is used way more than either the Cutter master or a well equipped Clarkson Mk1.  As far as collets go either Chinese versions or an adapter for ER11 collets works very well.
