i have a Myford 1989 S7 lathe and am losing registration on the cross slide between the ball handle and the micrometer dial.No matter what I try, dismantling and cleaning leaving, the shaft dry or a light touch of oil, I have also tried fitting a new diaphragm washer but all to the same result loss of registration. Can somebody help in my quest .

Idon’t have experience of the Myford, but it is not uncommon for the dial to be fitted with a spring- loaded ball for friction. This ball can be lost on dismantling.

Hi Peter, exacty what do you mean by ‘losing registration’, does the dial spin freely without the ball handle moving? Is the tapered spigot which the dial rotates on loose on the cross slide screw?

Hi Guys, Colin There is no ball it’s just a friction drive with the diaphragm washer. Tony when rotating the ball handle to take a cut the micrometer dial moves some of the time but not all of the time when rotating the ball handle, hence you do not know how much you have taken off , that is what I think I mean by losing registration. Peter.

It sounds like the end bracket may have a shallow pocket worn into it and/or maybe the thrust face on the feed screw is also worn.

Any of this will allow the dial to touch the end bracket and move slightly in use. That is, there should be a small gap between the bracket and the dial.

Sometimes turning the spring washer around can help. It is only supposed to fit one way though. The alternative is a narrow shim washer inside the dial where it contacts the feedscrew.
