I have a requirement to make some new baskets for our Ultrasonic tank.
The old ones have now worn away on the bases with the activity.
I have been searching on the net and some of the prices for a Sq Mtr of brass mesh are frightening. One was £201 pre Sq Mtr, one I found at £48 per.
Does anyone know of a better source that can supply smaller pieces?
I have tried all the normal traders like Reeves and Arc Euro and Chronos.

Blackgates do a brass starining gauze but its more like 0.5mm if thats any help.

Blackgates and Bruce both do stainless mesh as well.

              Hi Clive
Could you repair some of the bases by using the sides of one of the others?
Just to get you going again?
              regards David

                Hi Clive
Try Squires Tools Bogonor Regis. It’s the sort of thing they stock.

Hi David, In fact we are down to the last basket and the more use it gets the worse it gets!
Thank you for all the info I am now going through them to see which is the best quote.
I still have the dolly former from all those years ago when I first made them so I can get to it straight away.
Out of interest, when we went from Freon and Chlorothene in the tanks I had to find a substitute medium.
Eventually came across an aqueous solution called Micro. This is used in a 2% solution and is very economic and biodegradable.
It is used by the US Nuclear industry to clean components and in tests out performed Freon for surface detritus.

                      Clive,
how much are you looking for ? At work we have some that is about 30 threads per inch.
We used to uase it for clay seiving before we “perfected” other methods of cleaning the clay.
It is about 2′ wide and I could probably aquire 1- 2 ‘ for you.

Alternatively when I used to work in an automotive paint shop we used a synthetic material
“nytal seiving ” to repair the powder coat vibro seive. This was available in a great many weaves and thicknesses.

Google that and i found the following

Clive, Nice to meet you here!
The baskets are about 5″ dia and about 4″ deep to fit the ultrasonic tank. The suspension basket will take two that size and there are four of us who use it.So roughly 5″ x 16″ plus 4 bases 5″ x 4 at the width you quote, 24″llength would do it, the sieve size is not really important as it will be less than a 1mm mesh.
As the ultrasonic runs at about 60C. I am dubious about synthetic materiel? and its longivity under the action of the ultrasonic vibrations.
would appreciate any help on this to keep cost down.
I can do a trade with you if you have any ‘ wants’. I have a couple of Dti’s not being used.

If your into stripping old microwave ovens, some of them use stainless mesh in the door, others have perferated steel sheet metal. If it looks as though it might have something useful I pull it to bits, been doing it since I was 6 or 7 years old. Ian S C

I called in at the local second hand shop this morning, and there for just a few dollars, a fire screen made of wire mesh, just about the right size, just a wee bit far away, but that may be a place to look all the same1 Ian S C

                                    Hi Clive,

When I needed some of this stuff I bought some frying pan splatter guards, They are just flat circles of stainless mesh about the size you need. they are about 350 mm dia and cost around £1.99p in a local general store.

You would need to bastardise several but at that price?

Thank you lads, I should have posted earlier.
One of our forum members was able to get me some mesh which I traded him with some Honey.
I managed to make 8 baskets in all with what he supplied.
Going back to the original problem with the baskets we had, the ultrasonic tank of course vibrates and in doing so wears away the base ring of the mesh basket and after some time the bottom drops out.

Could the baskets not be suspended in the tank to prevent this?
