Michael Gilligan's interesting piece (No 235, p 61) reminded me that my cheap and cheerful Astra bench drill has been sitting on four Blu Tack pads for many years. I have yet to borrow these and try his experiment but, provisionally, understand that in that position the material will be stiff until re-kneaded. In my innocence, I thought it would retain its damping qualities as well as locating the machine.

Is there a better material for my purpose, I wonder?

Sorbothane is used as an anti-recoil element in some shotgun and rifle butt pads. It doesn't seem to age-harden, and maintains its "springiness" over a long period of time and, I believe, through a very wide temperature range. Is this what ega is looking for?

I made my 'Gilligan Cube' test piece into the head of a turtle, then recycled it again to hold a filter inside a T-mount.

Thanks for the link and for the information which I will follow up. It sounds as though Sorbothane might also make a good base for the bench grinder.
