      Hi

I have some Kasenit powder which I intend to use on a part that i want to make.

It occurred to me that I have both EN1A and EN1A Pb (ie leaded) steel.. Will the process work with leaded steel or should the EN1A be used.

I know that leaded steels are not suitable for welding, this made me wonder about case hardening.

      TIA

      Dave

        Is it a no-no

I think the same applies, the lead content will most likely interfere with the hardening process and render it ineffectual

I found a few websites like this example which say EN1A with Lead can be case hardened, so worth trying.

Case Hardening is done at a lower temperature than gas or electric welding – no melting, which is what causes trouble. Leaded steel cracks when the metal recrystallises resulting in poor welds. Welding Leaded Steel creates poisonous fumes too, but I doubt case hardening gets hot enough.

I caseharden small parts made with en1a leaded with no problems. They are box hardened in the barbque.

                Good morning all

Thank you for all your replies.

I like Bernard's method, Any excuse for a barbeque is good by me!

                Cheers

I stand corrected and better still by those who have done it successfully. Thank you for adding to my knowledge.

                  Regards Brian
