Inverter motor package

I am looking for a inverter motor package that is wired up ready for use. I have looked on the internet but I am not sure of what to purchase, it all seems to me to be rather confusing. I have contacted one outlet that looks whats needed but was told I mite need to fit this to the existing belt pulley, as the motor spindle may not fit.

I have a 9×20 lathe, has anyone fitted a inverter, any advice will be appreciated,also if the motor package is ready to run what happens to the safety features on the lathe. I have three features that are vital , emergency stop button, door to gear box stop, and chuck guard stop, how are they wired in.

Basically I don't what to buy an inverter where I will have problems fitting the motor to the pulley arrangement, no hassle needed please.

There is some one that sells inverters as more of a package on homeworkshop.org. They come with a pendant for controlling them. More or less prewired. I have never noticed anyone selling a package that includes a motor with the pulley on it or anyone that does specific packages for Chinese lathes which I assume it is.

The pendants do have an emergency stop but no facilities to allow things like door switches to be connected in. I suspect the majority of people on here don't open them while the lathe is running unless they need to study some problem. Some may remove the chuck guard but why "open" it when the lathe us running? The inverters will have facilities for wiring this sort of thing in.

You don't mention which 9×20 lathe. If it's variable speed it may well use a DC motor and you might have a lot of problems trying to fit an AC motor to the lathe. Not just fitting a pulley to it but actually fitting the motor in the lathe.

A guy called Gavin Oseman regularly advertises on the Home Workshop site. He sells a lot of inverters and sometimes inverter/motor packages. He only has inverters advertised at the moment but it could be worth a call to see if he has any motors.

I fitted a 3/4hp motor to my Chester 9 x 20 and inverter but it wasnt a straight bolt on job.

The motor is a frame 71 size but with a smaller diameter shaft. I had to turn down the shaft on my motor to fit the pulley, didnt want to bore it and couldn't any way without another lathe….

Secondly the motor mounting arrangement on the lathe is crap, the foot mount of the 71 motor doesnt just drop in. I made some alloy blocks to pick up the existing mounting holes.

On a brighter side, once fitted it works faultlessly…..

I mounted the inverter on the side of the stand, in a large box. I removed all the orig wiring, but used the existing nvr switch and the fwd/rev switch. The speed pot is mounted on the side of the new box that houses the inverter.

I have a spare pulley and a brand new boxed 3/4 hp 2800 rpm motor if you are interested?

Lots and lots of people have bought off him for rather a long time. I've not heard of a single problem. Can't say the same about drives direct. However the person who had that went in completely blind without having any idea of the problems associated with using them.

The pulley answer may be to find one of the right size or close with the correct bore or one that can be sized correctly. I have been known to buy a reamer to do that especially if it's going to be hard to check the fit when the hole is bored. I use the reamer for final sizing, maybe even a hand reamer if I'm concerned about the machine it's done on.

The pulley is a special….any old pulley will not do if to maintain the original speeds on the machine……..I've added three photos to my albums to illustrate…..but here's one anyway..

The 920 lathe uses Gates drive belts, these are expensive and do not last very long, might be an opportunity to change the pulley and use a standard Z belt.
