Is there some way that PM's can be saved?. I believe they will be lost when the

site has it's re-vamp. Regards, Lynne

Apart from copy & pasting to a txt file any that you want to keep I think they will all disappear unfortunately.

          regards

As Old iron says copy and paste them somewhere else. Should not be too much in the 6 pages of PMs that you have unlike the 220 plus pages I have though to be honest I don't think there is anything there that I'll be saving, can always ask someone again for an e-mail address if they want something sending.

I wonder if there's a way that a messaging app such as Signal can be "integrated" with the Forum?

Signal is almost exactly the same as WhatsApp except not controlled by Facebook.

It has much better functionality for messaging anyway, the ability to back up messages (I think), end to end encryption, is free, can also support phone and video calls, and supports both p2p and group messaging. It would be much better to reduce the number of messaging apps one has to use, at the moment I have email (4 accounts), sms, WhatsApp, Signal, this forum, and a couple of other forums. People also sometimes send me messages on Instagram. Crazy!

Does this mean that moderators can read members' PMs?

I ask because you apparently know how many pages the member concerned has.

Standard net "upgrades" always result in a loss of data

On another forum i am on the moderators have just admitted that they can go into the archive if there are complaints of bulling and abuse for the integrity of the forum and as is often said think twice before you press the send button if you would not like your grand mother to see it do not send it.

Yes, see this ** thread ** link to last page (it's quite long).

Yes, I've said it before and also said that I don't read the messages unless its needed, in this case I simply looked to see how many the member had.

But in a case like yesterday where another member thought that 3 PM's were dodgy I did look at those to see what was being said as well a looking a the three "offenders" accounts to see if they had done the same to anyone else.

As the long time manager of a system in a different context, both forum and eMail, professional administrators usually work to three key concepts which I suspect may well line up with what Jason has said:-

                            1. It is not normally any of a moderator's business what is said in a PM or eMail so in general GDPR and site terms and conditions would apply
                            2. If it is made my business to look at PM or eMail as an administrator it is done in a professional and in as limited a manner as appropriate, and as permitted by GDPR and T&C.
                            3. Thirdly, and most importantly, apart from either of the above life is just to short to read anything one doesn't have to!

                              Thanks John,

I looked at the first postings on that thread and realised it was just a moaning thread, so of no interest whatsoever.

Thank you for this illuminating reply; I missed your earlier statement and have not noticed anything in the "small print" about it.

I don't doubt that the ability to read messages is used responsibly and it causes me no personal concern. I think, however, that if supposedly "private" messages are read, the moderator should make the fact known in the same way that moderator's edits to posts are shown.

It seems that there may be a positive aspect to the forthcoming loss of everyone's messages!
