So I finally jumped in and brought myself a Boxford Lathe, and currently just fixing all the issues. Managed to figure out how to take the play out the cross slides etc.

However just notices a small bolt missing. The thread is a little damaged but looks like it could be a M6x1.25. But as it’s a British machine made in 1952 I’m surprised it’s metric?

Anyone have any pearls of wisdom or knowledge they can shine on the situation.

          More likely 1/4in BSW (20tpi)

Take the handle off to expose more thread. It could be 1/4 BSF, or 1/4 UNF even, as the lathe is a South Bend clone.

It's a 1/4" BSW round nut with a slight dome top and a slot across it. You need a screwdriver with a slot ground in the middle of the blade to tighten it.

It is indeed ¼" BSW, mine has a narrow 'locknut' style nut on it. I know as I had to source one for the top slide.

How are you going about removing backlash, I'm having trouble with mine on both cross and top slides and tailstock?

Agreed it is1/4 BSW nut with a rounded head. I made one for mine from a standard nut and turned it down to the required dimensions.

                  regards
