Didn't want to hijack any other posts so created a new thread.
The link takes you to a Youtube video showing how a garden cloche can be used to provide some protection when shopping.

I don't have a cloche. I do have a small 8×6 greenhouse though……justa bit awkward getting to the shops with it..

Whatever the unfortunate date of posting …

I think that is a very well-reasoned idea.

Having gone into our local supermarket during elderly/vulnerable hour on Wednesday I think even pgk pgk’s greenhouse would not give enough protection!

Point is that all garden centers are shut and as such it is a non essential item.

When I first saw this yesterday I also wondered for a second or two what the meaning was. Then I recalled that the eminent person describing it was an anaesthetist, as well as steam engine rescuer, and I would trust him totally. The more you think about it the more sense it makes.

Makes sense to me. Perhaps Matt Hancock could learn from it and buy up all stocks for NHS staff, but it probably hasn't got the right paperwork.

Brilliant lateral thinking. The concept is so simple, with a few tweaks for wearability, could be translated into somthing quite useful offering all round protection when combined with a respirator/facemask. There are probably some manufacturers with vacuum forming equipment on slack time around the country who could knock out something along these lines, in large numbers and cheaply.

Saw a man wearing a full face-motorcycle helmet in the supermarket today. Has the added benefit of protecting against tins of beans falling off the shelf onto your head. Won't protect against airborn droplet spread though.

Sadly the garden cloche idea won't help much either. To make it work you would need to draw air in through a filter and maintain a positive pressure in the cloche. That is how the best medical protective kit works.

Well if you cant get a clear plastic garden cloche you could improvise with a common plastic bucket. Drill two large holes in it with a hole-saw at about eye-position. To seal up the eye-holes against airborne sputum, two small pickle relish glass jars could be inserted into the holes and sealed up with silicone.

President Trump said he had used the Defence Production Act to "hit 3M hard", without providing additional details. The law dates back to 1950 and allows a president to force companies to make products for national defence.

Capitalism only really works in peacetime

We had to rebuild our own chemical industry in WW1 because we used German companies for tons of stuff

I also think the US need is greater, they have a massively unequal society and covid 19 is going to have a party over there

Or just reverse engineer and argue after but raw material is in short supply too. It's the same failure on test kits UK – can't get the stuff to make them and train folk to use them. the argiments for globalsiation ad efficiencies of centralisation fall apart in these circumstances when interdependance is blocked for personal need. Subbing stuff to be made cheaply in China is costing us more now..
