Highlight then Ctl-A; paste with Ctl-V (standard Windows)

"How do you copy and paste on this forum? "

If you are refering to photos, you can use Ctrl-A to copy and Ctrl-V to paste into other documents. etc but pasting into MEW does not work. Instead you have to upload photos to an album in your account and then link that to your post.

                Procedure shown here: **LINK**

How to post photos is a common question on this site. Why is there not an easy to find link on the home page ???

Ctl-A selects the whole page to the clipboard, surely you mean Ctl-C to copy just what you high-light.

It rather depends on what operating system you have? Windows, Andrroid, Mac?

Simply highlighting text (with a double tap on the screen) is enough to make the process simple to follow on my screen.

Absolutely no different than any screen, whatever forum etc, for my ‘puter.

Absolutely … my apologies! And in the absence of anything to the contrary, I assumed text (not pics) and Windows (since any other OS/Device is usually stated).

I tried the above and this is what I get. angry

                        I have windoze 10.

I was trying to copy and paste some text, rather than type it out all again.

You are just hitting the paste button.

If you follow what was said you just need to put your cursor where you want the text and then hold down the Ctrl button and while it is still down press the V buttom.

From your attempts above it looks like you weer just pressing the V button. I get the same as you show if I try and use the paste icons or right click and paste.when in Chrome.

If you use Edge rather than Chrome then the usual right click and paste will work, that is why you are getting the message that your browser does not support paste.

Admittedly not the ‘home’ page, Paul … but the landing page for the Forum:

All Forum Topics has an easy to find list of Website FAQs

                            https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/

Top of that list, and sticky, seems a reasonable-enough place to look.

The fact that Mark has 50 odd photos in his album suggests he is not having problems with photos.

I get a similar message on the Mac [running Safari, in el Capitan] … but, if I recall correctly, it only appears if I am trying to paste something into the hyperlink creation box.

As the message indicates: It’s a browser issue [but I know no more than that]

… it doesn’t happen on the iPad though.

But only highlighting part of a post and doing the ctrl c bit isn't half as exciting as scrolling through the bloated repeats of some postings. Latest Myford praise is a classic example. disgust

One of the failings of this site, and CONSTANTLY repeated, posting numbers may have helped but there are those who need to put a complete posting to validate their reply.

Falls into the same category of trying to view Chinese photos regularly posted.

                                      Regards Ian.

I get the same on the Firefox browser if I use the paste button on the context menu. Holding down the ctrl key on the keyboard while pressing the v key works just fine. That is an operating system function and bypasses the browser functions.

ctrl+c, ctrl+v, and ctrl+x (cut) should work on text in any program running in a graphical environment such as windows, or X in Linux.  It doesn't work at command line level where ctrl+c is used to abort the running program. On MAC the ctrl key has a strange symbol, a sort of square with circles at the corners.

                                          Hope that helps.

A classic example of convenience colliding with security!

The security problem in this example is Browsers and Websites running certain Apps or script tools, especially Javascript, can't tell the difference between a mouse click entered by a real human being and a mouse click generated in software by malware. Forcing the user to paste by entering the ctrl-v keyboard combination guarantees a real person is in control, rather some dodgy code Silly Old Duffer naively downloaded from a website run by the Mafia!

Very unusual for any web service serious about security to allow passwords to be cut, copied or pasted. They have to be typed in by a human. Others are strict about all data entry. In private doing local stuff on your own computer – word processing, spreadsheets, email etc, – there's no harm in mouse pasting. It's being on the web that makes pasting unwise.

There are ways of re-enabling click pasting on the web but it's not wise to bypass a sensible security measure just to avoid typing ctrl-v. Doing so is roughly equivalent to leaving your car engine running while you pop into a shop…
