Looking to pay for someone to finish an engine

As a child (I am now 43) myself and my grandad worked on a scale steam locomotive in his workshop. The engine never got finished (I think we got to a point where it would run on its own steam but never completed the body work).

sadly my grandfather passed away recently.

I would love to finish it in his memory, but simply do not have the tools or ability. So I am looking for help. Ideally I would like to find someone who could take on the project for me. I have no doubt that much of the engine will need stripping down. It I would like to keep as much of it in it’s current condition as possible (many of this rivets were banged in my a younger me). It’s therefore important that the work is done sympathetically, and to a high standard.

i am probably asking too much, I will of course pay for the build.

Simon I'm sorry to hear about your granddad's passing. My dad passed away leaving a part-built Jinty, but his work had deteriorated over his last 2 years due to medication. I couldn't bare to throw the engine away but didn't see it as viable to finish due to the re-work required so I donated it to the local steam model railway along with the drawings and remaining castings and told them to gift it to someone deserving who otherwise couldn't have afforded to buy them.

My point is, you might do well to find a local steam model society and visit them on a weekend or club night and find a likely candidate there. If you tell us your location you might get some suggestions.

Yes definitely look for the nearest club to you. There are plenty up & down the country. I am sure there will be plenty of offers to assist you.

The 'value' of any finished model is very dependent on whether or not the boiler has passed a proper inspection and hydraulic test.

With that done, you can assess just how much you wish to spend on completing the model.

I live near to Kingsbury, but would transport the engine pretty much anywhere. The boiler was never certified I know that much but it’s unlikely to be used, certainly not with members of the public.

Thats said I am willing to take any advice I can get.

5” three cylinder Martin Evans Royal Engineer (Royal Scott class?) that at some point *May* have been converted to a Fury

Simon may I suggest you go along to kingsbury Water Park there you will find Echills Wood Railway link

there are many loco builders to be found there and maybe someone who can help if not try Tamworth ME link

Martin Evans drew a trio of locos based around the Royal Scot design. Fury is a compound, with a high pressure boiler.

The "conventional " designs are a Royal Scot as designed by Fowler and the Stanier, taper boiler rebuild.

The full size Fury, loco no. 6399 had a boiler pressure of up to 1800psi, but was not very successful. I 'm not sure what pressure Martin Evans specified but it was high.

All have 3 cylinders.
