I have had this for some time and always wondered what it was for.

It can obviously be clamped onto a ¼" rod or could be held by the ¼" rod on the other end of the tool. The cross bar pivots in ons plane and the limits are shown in the last two photos. The ball ends of the pivoting arms are different diameters, one is ⅛" dia and the other end is 5/32".

The total length of the pivoting arm is 3 ¾".

If anybody knows what it is for, or could make use of it, please let me know

      Thanks, Bob

It is part of a dial indicator mounting. The dial extended bar fits in the knurled clamp so that it reverses the movement for say centering bores on a lathe.

As Alan says its part of a dial indicator unit, specifically for converting a rear plunger dial indicator to a DTI type of indicator. The mounting rod on the dial indicator is held in the 1/4" hole by the thumb screw and the rocking lever is adjusted to rest against the plunger on the dial indicator. The other end of the rocking lever then functions the same as the lever on a DTI.

If you go to Travers Tool.com and search for their part # 57-051-196 (Starrett  part # 196A1Z) you will see a picture of it.

Alan and John, thanks for the answers. It was good to see a picture of it on the Travers Tool link.
