      Dear all,

Two christmases ago my wife bought me the castings from Hemmingway to make a gearbox for my myford. Its been a long process . I cut the gears and innards firstt [and made a spare set for my mentor harold ] He decided to fabricate his 'box' and did so in a weekend. I persevered with the castings but have given up and likewise fabricted the 'box' in an afternoon!!.

It is now commig to fruition and have just the front cover to saw and file and the will need to make the brass plates. I have decided that i just want to get it running and can't be bothered with etching the brass plates.

does anyone know of a company who would do such a thing?

      Regards ian

          Try Diane Carney

She etches all sorts of bits.

          regards David

I made the Machin gearbox for my ML7 which I think is the same. At the time the front plate was available from the supplier (pre. Hemmingway) and was aluminium etched . You can make a reasonable replica from aluminium or brass sheet and then using a pc draw and print what you want. The paper version can be laminated and glued quite successfully with the advantage when it gets worn simply make another. Cost is zero if you can do this on your computer. Whilst I did not use this method for the gearbox I have since made similar cover plates for other machines in the workshop.

I made my Machin gearbox about 30 years ago as the Myford gearbox was and still is very expensive. In terms of value I learnt a great deal about using jigs etc during construction all, this was expertly described by Machin. That experience alone was well worth the cost of the kit!

thanks to you both.I shall get in touch with Diane soon David. Before doing so, I shall ,rather than copy the Hemmingway drawing, take your advice Graham and play with drawing package and tidy it up as well as I think resize it as the fabricated casing for the gearbox[1/4 mild steel plate] is slightly larger than the cast casing. Thanks again Ian
