Looks good. Anything, which makes the extraction more controllable, is better than thrashing with a hammer.
I hope you were not using a steel faced hammer – a copper or lead mallet will load the bearings but not damage them like a hard faced hammer which considerably increases the impulse force transmitted through the bearing contact surfaces.
I use wedges similar to those marketed by ArcEuroTrade (but mine are home-made) and suitable spacers to remove tight MT tapers. Also works well.
