Simple collet chuck removal tool

I have a collet chuck for my Emco Compact 8 and use a homemade drawbar to keep it tight. Unfortunately the only way to remove it is to loosen the drawbar and rap on it with a hammer, which is not doing the bearings any favours. I had thought about making a threaded ejector on the outboard end but the spindle holeis 20.5mm, which is not a convenient size to tap. I decided to attack it from the other end. Made a prototype out of PVC pipe and it works so well I don't think I'll bother making it out of metal.

Looks good. Anything, which makes the extraction more controllable, is better than thrashing with a hammer.

I hope you were not using a steel faced hammer – a copper or lead mallet will load the bearings but not damage them like a hard faced hammer which considerably increases the impulse force transmitted through the bearing contact surfaces.

I use wedges similar to those marketed by ArcEuroTrade (but mine are home-made) and suitable spacers to remove tight MT tapers. Also works well.
