Hi All;

I have just joined this forum – already a member of both Drummond and Myford Yahoo groups – as I have a ML7 and Drummond early M.

Can anyone share their experience of either owning / building / using such an accessor please?

Hello Mike,

Welcome to the Forum, I'm sure you will find much of interest here.

I don't have personal experience of a screwcutting gearbox on an ML7 other than the Myford made version, but I do know that the Sparey gearbox is now a distant accessory; a more up to date version is available through Hemingway Kits.

Ii is now known as the David Machin gearbox, with cast aluminium casing and a built in fine feed gearing that Sparey didn't include. As Sparey, the gearbox uses all Myford change wheels and my friend who built one has been pleased with it.

Hi Mike,

welcome, you will like this group, there are a good number of M type users on here so the chat is always good.

Are you thinking about fitting a sparey to your ML7 or to the M type. The latter is possible but requires a lot of patience a careful fitting. I had one ( a sparey gearbox ) some years ago but declined to fit it to the M type as I rarely cut screw theads and would probably have mainly just used the Fine feed. It was simpler to just make a Duplex fine feed rather than go to the trouble of fitting a gearbox.

I have some pictures of a M type with a sparey fitted, let me know if you would like to see any

A return to this subject, as there are frequently questions about the Sparey gearbox on this and other forums/fora, one of which concerns the original article in The Model Mechanic magazine in the 1950s.

I have recently obtained a digital copy of the 2 articles about the construction of the gearbox, in the March and April 1950 issues of The Model Mechanic, should anyone like a copy then message me with email address

Search engines often bring up threads on this forum, so this info will hopefully help to end some frustrating searches around t'Interweb.

Long delay in replying was due to multiple family members coming to visit duringAugust.

I shall enjoy yet another opportunity to increase my engineering knowledge.

Interst in Sparey's gearbox was only really to find out whether it was a) an option, or b) financially worth it & c) whether I really do enough screw cutting to warrant it – which, like you, I the case – so I won't pursue the idea. Too much work, and expense via Hemingway.

I thinkI shall go down the fine feed route too.

PS interesting that when I press 'Return' – the corsor goes back to the beginning instead of the next line. Anyone else find that?

Hello Mike,

I have had exactly that problem using Microsoft Edge as my browser. It also blocked me posting photos which was a nuisance.

Try holding down the 'shift' button at the same time as 'return' that was a dodge that worked for me.
