Some nice castings on this thing on ebay, looks like they used their own foundry to tart it up a bit, unlike the usual mass produced look shapers have

Was surprised to see delivery for 50 quid which is pretty kewl

So if you're in the market for a shaper…

edit: looks like there's no front support or tilting table lock plate, easy to fabricate something and handy for getting the price down because it won't be much good without its front support system

It looks quite a lot like the larger Alba shapers, eg the 14 and 18 inch ones, both of which I have owned. (Only got the 18 inch one now.) My 18 inch one was missing the table support too, so I made the castings for each end.

Compared to what I have paid for my ones over the years, that looks a bit spendy to me. My 18 inch was NZ$350, which might be somewhere between 100 and 150 British pounds, with a very substantial vice. Usually the smaller machines (6 to 10 inch) are worth more, easier to fit into the shed.

Went to have a peek at the Newey (pricey but I guess it depends on it's condition) – and spotted this smaller machine

Shapemaster – eBay

Not heard of them before. It appears they were made by an American company (Young Engineering Labs) based in St Paul (Minn) – but the seller is here in the UK.

As always – Caveat Emptor!

For anyone interested in the 'Shapemaster' – someone on one of the shaper groups found this link, which gives more detail of the specification. It has some unusual table tilting features but having no 'knee' may be a little limited in cutter height adjustment/clearance.

I found this one which is a scan of the sales leaflet **LINK** .

Looks as if you are supposed to use the tilting capability of the table to help get round the lack of vertical movement.

In milling machine terms a sort of Deckel v Bridgeport concepts I suppose. Although the Deckel does have vertical table feed which weakens the analogy. A lot!
