      Expansion link

I'm in the closing stages of purchasing a second hand Dart for restoration so I've now started taking more interest in John Smiths series "A close scale GWR 14xx" just in case I need to remake anything and could use his version.

The expansion link is in issue 4450/2. I can't see is how the lifting arm attaches to it. Martin Evans version has a yoke bolted to the link but nothing like that exists in Johns drawings.

        Have I missed something?

          Hi Pete,

The full size loco has the lifting links attached to the top of the expansion link using the pin that attaches the eccentric rod. Unfortnately, this is about the worst possible way to suspend an expansion link and usually gives pretty poor valve events. The valve gear can be modified to give reasonable events ( maybe John Smith's version has been mopdified?) but you would do better sticking to the Martin evans design where the link is suspended from the middle via the yoke (unless you want to keep to the prototype).

Thanks for clearing that up. Although I have some parts of the valve gear that require re-making I'm not planning on a complete rebulid so I'll pass on that part of John Smiths prototypical design.

Another question about the expansion links. How did Martin Evans propose the pins in the valve rod crosshead and the die block be held in place and still be removable for maintenance? There's not a lot of clearance as it passes between the arms of the expansion link bracket.

              Pete
