I have wired up alot of these with good results for single phase for/rev op, i have an ml7 booklet and i use 1 and 3 for 240V ac input, 2 and 6 for St winding and 5 and 7 for Run winding (as the booklet states), i have two of these type A switches with the link from 2 and 5 missing, what i have done is used the bottom link (4 to 8 as these are only used in 3 phase). All this now does is put a dead short across the ac input (1 and 3), it seems strange that i have two switches exactly the same?? Has anyone come across this before, the motor i have is a good quality English 1/2hp which works well on just 240V in and would suffice as it runs spot on but i would like the reverse as well, The short is measured with no wires connected to eliminate wiring problems and is the same on both switches. of course with the switch in the off mode no short is there, when in either forward or reverse the 0 ohm dead short appears. Thanks for any help!! Paul.

          Paul,

A strange thing, as terminals 4 and 8 should only ever connect with each other, as they are for the fixed input for 3-phase which never changes polarity.

You say the link from 2 and 5 is missing, link should be between 1 and 5.

          The standard links are 1 to 5, 3 to 7, and 4 to 8.

Assuming that you don't have 2 switches which have been dismantled and rebuilt wrongly, ie with the posts that interconnect terminals in the wrong places.

Why not just take the link clip from 4 and 8 and put it into 1 and 5, your missing link. They are easily prised out with a screwdriver if you rotate the switch a bit. Then connect as per Myford handbook.

Incidentally, if you have never dismantled one, terminals 1 and 2 are connected internally by the rod, as are terminals 6 and 7. there are 2 sizes of rod, 4 short and 2 long, and the long ones pass through the ebonite disc.

Sorry if this is teaching Granny, but other readers may not know.

          Phil

Thanks Phil for your help, i have now sorted it out, it was part me being stupid and the previous owner messing around with links etc, once again many thanks for your help.

            Regards Paul.
