Hi all

I have a 4×6 bandsaw recently bought second hand. It came without a blade. So off to screwfix i went, picked up a blade and fitted it. But the blade just will not stay on. Dose any know of a video or write up that will help me set up the blade properly?

If you put 6" x 4" bandsaw you tube into google you will be inundated with videos of what you are looking for

Recently Brian Wood of lathe gear fame and who is often on here, described how to align the wheels using a length of wire or fishing cord. I have one and whilst they are very useful they can be trickie to sort, be very patient. John

The good old 6 by 4 bandsaw is a great bit of kit when it works. I have had one for a long long time and they can be a bit temperamental at times. It usually comes down to keeping the blade tension up and adjusting the top wheel so that the blade stays against the flange of the wheel. As mentioned above there are lots of youtube videos and there have been some articles in MEW over the years. A decent blade also helps, I am not sure that the Screwfix blades are the best quality.

Go back to my posting on 3 December where I gave a fairly detailed procedure for setting one of these small bandsaws up using a wire stretched round the blade guide wheels.

You might be surprised at how badly your saw has been set up!

After tensioning the blade with the blade guides slack rotate the blade drive wheel by hand to check that the blade stays in place. If the blade starts to move of the wheel you will need to alter the alignment. Keep doing this until the blade tracks without moving off. Then tighten the blade guides so that the blade is square at the cutting position.

Hi Steve

My 6×4 was running partly off the wheels and started to cut the blade guard/shield below the wheels, when checking it was the centre fixing screw loose that was holding the non-driven wheel assembly to the frame, tightened that and all was well again.

I bought a replacement blade for my bandsaw at Screwfix it was made by Starrett.
