Hi All.

I have just got hold of my first Lathe. It is a Myford Super 7 from 1971-73.

I have a quick question. On the 60 tooth backgear there is a key to engage the smaller brass gear on the pullyhead. This key is operated by a small lever (H4 on the Myford headstock exploded diagram)

This lever was missing so i ordered a new one from myford, but it is a loose fit in the key. Is this normal. Should the lever be fixed in some way or is it designed to be removed when the lathe is running.

Hello and welcome, No question is stupid, just beware of some of the answers (especially from me )

Just been out for a quick look at mine.
In my case the little lever is firmly attached to the cam; I've never had reason to remove it, but there is no obvious means to secure it either. From that I guess interference fit, Loctite, or centre punched from the other end of the hole.
That said, I can'e see any signs of a centre punch mark, so I think I'd use Loctite myself.

it stays in place all the time, clean off all oil in the location slot, thin smear of Loctite (so you don't glue the locking cam as well !). Tap lever in lightly and leave to cure.

Just looked at mine too & agree with above. It looks like a press fit. Maybe it got hit somehow & elongated the hole.

It should be a taper fit, as I found out when I broke mine. Dear old Nobby who used to post here put me right.

Ok cheers for all the reply’s guys. I thought that should be the case. There is a slight taper bu it does not bite to anything so I think loctite will be the answer. thanks again👍🏻
