Which vice?

Hi

I placed an order for a Vertex K5 milling vice for my RF40 milling machine but they were out of stock at Chronos so I'll have to wait a few weeks.I was thinking, maybe a Vertex VA4 is a better product?I can still change my order so would like to hear from those in the know before I decide.

Hi Nuno,

I guess both vices will serve you well. If Chronos is out of stock, have you checked other suppliers?

The VA4 seems to be a Kurt clone, so when you clamp a work piece the moving jaw will also clamp the work downwards. I own a Vertex vice (another model) and I am very pleased with my vice.

I'm not in a hurry as I'm going to be abroad for a month so I can wait.Maybe I'll go for the K5 as the jaws are1" wider.The VA4 is tempting because of the downwards action but it's also more expensive.

Vice or Vise? I have some very old engineers catalogues which refers to them as a Vise, I thought Vice was one of naughty things you should not have but do.

Anyone know when Vice became the common name for that grippy thing on your workbench?

My dictionary gives them both the same meaning for the grippy thing, it also says that Vise is often the American variant

As is often the case … the "American" version is probably also the original "English" [see here]

My OED (the 20-odd volume one that needs a strong shelf to itself) gives both spellings, but says "vise" is now usual only in the US. The earliest quotation it cites is from 1500 as vise, but all the later ones use vice.

The word is perhaps connected with "device", and was (also in the 1500s) used to denote any mechanical contrivance, usually incorporating some sort of screw, .The word, in various spellings, was used in the 1300s to mean both a spiral staircase and a sort of winch to crank up crossbows and catapults.
