Looks to be some sort of adjustable offset indexing device although there is no obvious means of holding a workpiece to it. Unless the central screw is simply a blanking plug to protect a threaded bore into which suitable carriers can be fixed.

I had a similar device made many years ago as part of what could be called a laser protection filter test rig so that multiple tests could be made on one sample and damage objectively evaluated.

Could they be some form of slotting tool for cutting internal splines.

Depth of cut on the first one is done like a boring head and the second one would have a similar arrangement. You then index the cutter round for the number of splines required. Drive it in and out on a slotter or manual rack and pinion, maybe even horizontally on a shaper

The first looks very similar to one of the Deckle punch milling attachments.

Well l have looked at them for weeks, but do think jason is right about the tool for cutting internal splines,as for the other one have not got a clue ,l did think about altering it to use in the tail stock for taper turning, but will se if anyone knows what it is before l play with it.

Is that small "boring head" ty etool in the second photo actually being held in a collet, similarities to this Aciera accessory

Clive Fosters first paragraph beat me to the post, its exactly what I would have written.

And Jason B beat me with his thoughts about the second one.

Re, the first one, the table on my Meddings high speed drill sits on a similar boss
This could replace the table, depending on size, and allow a circle of holes at a fixed pcd, adjustable via the dovetail slide.
Is there a sensible number of slots, say 36 to give 10º spacing, or 24 to give a 15º spacing?

Alternatively for holding cutters or saws on a tool and cutter grinder, either for sharpening, or making in the first place.

Yes bill there are indeed 24 slots on the tool,to me it looks like it was factory made ? with its chrome part on it and the finish ,its just knowing what it was for and if it is still of use to anyone before l play with it.

First one can also become the basis for an ornamental turning 'eccentric chuck' which might be what you were thinking of doing with it.

Well, neglecting the small boring head, the second one looks like it could be a cutter grinder attachment. The hex brass piece and the rod through it may be part of the spring-loaded blade for indexing off the cutter, rather than using fixed division plates. For example, if the flutes were not evenly distributed, as in some anti-chatter reamers. When I sharpened cutters, this was the method used, both on new ones being ground for the first time, and for subsequent re-sharpening.

Hi bill ,the brass hex piece an rod ,just lock the spindle as you index it ,l think that tool will have a use ,had another look today and it will fit the tee slots on the myford,so could be handy for small boring work, just a thought.
