Tell you in ten years…. I'm not sure if when you meet your designated retirement age you have to retire, ie your employer forces you to, or did the law change recently to make it optional?

At 65 I retired and got my life back ( I actually took early retirement at age 50) worked continuously from age 16 and enjoyed every minute, but I was ready to retire when my time came. I could have worked longer, it was my decision to go. Lots of folk regard retirement as something to fear, sad,sad people.

Got made redundant at 60. Best thing that ever happened. But time goes a lot faster than it used to

I retired three weeks ago at the age of 63,I know I’m in the holiday period but not missing the 500 – 1000 miles a week driving to customers but I do miss the van and have to now learn how to pack my camping gear in the
car when I go to steam rally’s with my engine.

There will be times when you wish you were back at work… it's amazing how many people call on your time for this that & the other…especially family… 'Oh mam/dad can you pick the kids up from school… can you do this/that on such & date… can you look after the dog while we …. They seem to forget you want some time to your self after all the years of working & bringing them up… still, it's family so you can't say no can you…😕

I worked from age 14 and was made redundant at age 78 so i got 64 years in. Now I find that the time passes much quicker and I still cannot fit in all I want to do or has to be done. I am fed up watching TV, repeats on repeats gets boring I can tell you so get outside and be active.Trouble is every job seems to find a job behind it.

Of course things still, happen, crisis occur and you still have to pay bills etc. Get out and walk at least a couple of miles to get a paper, read the funnies and do the crossword. Motivation is the biggest thing, 'Seeing something to do and saying I will do that tomorrow' is not good enough as tomorrow it will still need doing.

All sounds good advice chaps, I am determined to enjoy myself, not really a going out person but I love reading especially Roman history, I do enjoy tv but use catch up so can watch when it suits me, my workshop is my main joy, always been a practical bloke and always had one, spent my childhood with my Gramps in his workshop most evenings, I think tools are the greatest invention ever and hope I am worthy of his legacy,I have all his tools and look after them and no I don't lend them out, and yes retirement is to be valued and enjoyed so here we go

If things are going right you'll find that you are that busy that you wonder how you had time to go to work, don't just put your feet up and watch TV, you'll last longer if you always have something to do(other than bashing away at the B@#$% computer), Best wishes on your retirement.

I'd have recommended you start with the first one. 'The Silver Pigs' which is set (mainly) in the UK. It sets the scene for the rest.

I think the later ones work better as an extension of the story rather than standalone.

I like the Lindsey Davis books too, but for me the very best Roman-based novels are 'I, Claudius', and 'Claudius the God'. by Robert Graves, Lot's of of unsavoury goings on and it's hard to tell fact from fiction.

One thing you mustn't do. A 'my job is everything' ex-boss of mine had a male-menopause fling with his secretary just before retiring. It destroyed his marriage and estranged his only son. After an expensive divorce he moved to the seaside and ended up living alone. With no hobbies, friends, family or interests he sat in front of the telly and spent 4 years drinking himself to death. If only he'd bought a lathe!

I second Iains choice of reading . Lindsey Davis Falco series are great read, 15 odds books, Silver Pigs is the first in the series. When finished visit Rome and following in his footsteps. Don't expect to visit the workshop for at least 6 to 8 months whilst "er indoors" produces a list of jobs to be done! It took 18 months before I did any serious work. Converting my S7 to VFD,. I wish I had retired at 60.

Diverting from Roman history, as good as it is, I fitted a new capacitor to my bench drill that had gone up the swanee last week, I hoped it wasn't the motor but a word with a leckytrician colleague who confirmed it would probably be the capacitor. Contacted MMart 'Clarke' service centre who managed to procure me a replacement for £4 & a few coppers, plus postage, all in all drill fixed for just under £ 8.50p… result smile.

Ordered a new 4 jaw for my Kerry this morning as one drive screw eventually "gave up the ghost". This afternoon partially stripped the old 4 jaw (can't get the 4th screw out) and started repainting my small machine vice that I found in an antique shop. It's comming up very niceely!

After flying was cancelled this afternoon I hit the workshop. The intention was to get the speed setting worm and worm wheel fitted to the governors. Holes were drilled and rods made, and 1mm holes cross drilled for split pins. Having stupidly made the worm wheels to the drawings some while ago I now know they don't fit; and can't possibly fit. I had a perfunctory go at making the existing worm wheels smaller – failure. So make some more blanks, diameter roughly according to an integer number of teeth. Dug the previous fixture out of the box and started machining. Bogged it up, so had to make some more blanks. Messed two of those up; made two more blanks. Why is it the bog ups occur when using expensive material? This time the machining of the worm wheel teeth went properly:

                                              cutting governor worm.jpg

Worm wheel is about ½" diameter and the spiral flute tap is 7/16" UNC.

More holes were drilled to fit the worm and worm wheel:

                                              governor with worms.jpg

I think that's all the holes drilled in the governor body, so after I've tidied up the speed setting worm and worm wheel I can get on with other parts.

Supper now calls; chicken chow mein. The chicken has been marinating in soya sauce and chillies for the last 30 minutes. Time to hit the wok!

They seem to come around on a regular cycle, as does everything on 4 Extra
