Funnily enough I was thinking only yesterday that we hadn't heard from Windy lately, and hoped he was OK.

And here he is – hope everything is proceeding well Windy.

And my sweet peas are looking and smelling great just now. smiley

Been a bit lacking in energy Monday should have an idea how health things are progressing after last endoscopy biopsy.

What ever will plod on unfortunately the model hydro is on hold if I can might have a go either next month or the last meeting of the year at Kingsbury Water Park.

Still bits to make for it i.e.. head and props.

Am not too keen on driving any distance at the moment but will see.

Being stuck in the house this afternoon thought a bit of humour.

When in Hospital a while ago the Fulford Arms sent with my good young friend Roger the following rail sign.

Apart from the railway company bit felt should I put it on the workshop doors.

Maybe pushing my look but how appropriate for my interests.

Took apart the as new Etalon height gage I was fortunate enough to acquire, cleaned what I could in the ultra sonic, and painted the base my favourite green from a treasured tin of very old stock "One Shot" brand sign painters paint.

Went out to the shed and, amongst other things, laid a finger on the top of the heated welding rod quiver. It was only warmish to the touch. Slightly concerned, I touched the underside where the electric element is.

I now have a second degree burn on my left index finger. It's been soaking in cold water for an hour and the pain killers are starting to kick in. The finger will hopefully become usable again sometime in August…

As I am waiting on some bolts to arrive, spare workshop time today has been spent identifying, sorting, boxing and labelling part of the collection of miscellaneous taps and dies I inherited. Items are being boxed in 3.5 x 2 inch plastic boxes. I would like to reduce the chances of corrosion so looking for recommendations for 'stuff' to put in the boxes to accomplish this please.

I am pleased to say that I did not bog up the screwcutting on the governor central columns, and the DOC to get a good fit was spot on the theoretical value of 20 thou for a 32tpi Whitworth thread:

                      governor central column threads.jpg

Oh, and I've also got the bevel gears installed and running smoothly in the body, all based on measurements from the 3D CAD model. It's taken some hard thinking to make fixtures that ensure that everything lined up on a casting that's less than easy to hold:

                      governor bevel gears in situ.jpg

                      Andrew

PS: To forestall the pedants of course we all know that the theoretical thread depth for 32tpi Whitworth is 20.01 thou

Camphor as used in mothballs (not Napthalene mothballs) will do the job (available on EBay/Amazon from sellers of Indian spices/flavourings/chemicals), but it's somewhat impractical in small containers like those.

VCI paper wrap around the taps and dies will work very well.

Failing that, wipe them with a bit of way oil before putting them away.

My blood pressure tablets come in a bottle with a small sachet of silica gel – useful continuing supply about the right size for your application if you can find a 'supplier'

just a pity the bottles are opaque

Hi Nige, nice tidy up, try VCI paper cut / folded to size to fit your box's. I have pieces in all my tool cabinet draws, + in my mic' / dti / vernier box's etc. By the way I noticed the round drill / tapping mm/imp. gauge on bottom of your pic, have seen them before but have forgotten what the name for them is, grey matter slowing down 'n' all that, would appreciate reminder.

Hi Windy, I'm glad you've got a nice local pub to repair to, my local has adopted me and christened me 'Casey', after my job/hobby of driving locomotives. I might pop in to yours if I ever get around to doing one of my real ale tours in York!

                              Regards,

                              John.

Silica gell is bulky and needs periodic revitalising, VCI paper only lasts a year or less then absorbs water and becomes a liability – often find old never used spares with that wrapped around and causing rust.
Just paint with grease if not likely to use for a few years, or oil if likely to use soon. Using a small stiff artists brush ensures it gets into the corners.

I clean after use then dribble a small amount of cutting oil on mine, then they are ready to go next time.

I spent a good while trying to find what was in volatile corrosion inhibitors and discovered research that shows molasses is very effective!

You could put a slip of VCI paper in each box, molasses might be a bit messy.

About half my taps and dies are in the dining room, the other half in an unheated workshop. I've never needed any sort of corrosion inhibitor or oiling.

Personally I wouldn't keep taps and dies mixed together in boxes; it may not do the cutting edges any good.

Hoping for a dry day tomorrow to pack the tent then back home to carry on tidying the garage.

It's all in the wrist action…

Had the Hemingway Kits sensitive knurler (Marlco copy) kit under the bench for 3 odd years. Thought i'd better make a start.

I've got two knurlers, both are swivel head 3 pairs of knurls type, one a J&S, the other Pratt & Whitney, worked great on Students back in my Blighty workshop days, shanks ground down, and are a bit "beefy" (3/8" wide knurls) for my Boxford and i get inconsistent results.

So, the HK knurler needs narrower knurls, 3/16" according to the drawings. I thought 1/4"will do.
