I would also recomend Lawrence Block's "Burglar Who…. " series

Yes! Also Elmore Leonard, though I prefer his crime to his cowboys. Anyone else like Dornford Yates?

… The Romans made very good capacitors, not to mention concrete

        Mick  😆

Roman Capacitors Mick? Is that a typo, or a leg-pull? Or were those Romans even cleverer than I thought!

Many thanks for the tips on authors, SillyOldDuffer – I will certainly follow both up. I am a great fan of crime stories, but I'm getting fed up with modern detectives who can't function without a backup team of scene-of-crime experts, DNA labs, and without a mobile phone permanently grafted to one ear. Bring back the "little grey cells."

Have you tried Alexander McAll Smith – particularly the Sunday Philosophy Club series? – crime and detection with a difference!

Norman, I've read some of his stuff, but not the series you mention. I shall have to take a look at the series you mention. Thanks for the tip.

                  Hi Mike

Well here is another suggestion – Donna Leon – how could I forget her ! A long series featuring Commissario Brunetti and ( nearly) all set in Venice. What I like about series like this is that you get to "know" the characters. The ongoing interaction with his feisty wife and his overbearing, objectional, boss tie all the books together. Sadly I've read nearly everything ( several times!) by these authors and urgently seek someone new to add to my library!

                    Hi Norman,

I've read some of the Commissario Brunetti books, so I must have a search through for those I haven't read. My account with Kindle looks as if it's going to get a bashing during the next few days!

                    Many thanks

I also liked the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. It's been on the telly (which may or may not be a positive). Set around 1200 it also enlightened me to ther fact that the English Civil War (Cromwell and all) was by no means the first.

I read some mediaeval venetian detective stories many years back, but I don't they were brunetti. If memory returns I will let you know.

                      I will check out Brunetti.

Started to load up our collection of Slide rules, Rotary calculators & vintage mechanical calculators for the Belvoir Castle steam fair this weekend. As far as we know we are the only ones that show them as an awning display. Fri/Sat/Sun. NG321PE if anyone is interested. If you want a cuppa and a chat just mention the forum.

Today I finally got the ML4 bed, motor and countershaft permanently bolted down to the new top and got the motor and the drive belts refitted. Wired up the new Start/Stop switch and new cable to the motor all tested and run 😀.

Also started on cleaning up the 4 jaw chuck. Cleaning the face up has shown up what I believe must be machining marks. They are all curved the same way but I can't fathom why they should be such a large radius!

It may have been ground on a Lumsden type grinder, we had one in our toolroom with a 6ft diameter table and a 3ft diameter wheel head so grinding marks had an 18" radius.

Mike, thank you, that would make sense. I just didn't imagine that as a process a small(ish) chuck would go through.

That smallish chuck would go under the grinding head with 30 to 50 others, as many as would fit on the bed.

Had some good news yesterday at York Magnolia Centre results of another biopsy showed no sign of Lymphoma and anemia.

A few other issues but not too serious at the moment.

Had a call do I want to go to Classic Car Show at Ripon Racecourse on Sunday it will be in my friends Vauxhall.

It's now for sale as he has another Classic.

As usual will be rummaging in the stalls to find a bargain for the model engineering and other projects.

                                                    Not Today but yesterday.

I successfully managed to cut some internal splines on a set of clutch plates for a 1920's Alpha Romeo with the Tormach CNC mill using a single point cutting tool. The owner had a set water jet cut but they didn't go anywhere near fitting the splined hub. The hub has 34 teeth, I would imagine that the original plates would have been cut with A broach using a profiled cutter.

The original plates were warped due to overheating and also had radial cracks emanating from a series of 6 radial slots arranged from about half way from the centre to the perimeter of each plate. The plates are 4mm thick at the hub but are reduced from both sides to approximately 1.6mm thick so it is hardly surprising that they warp easily.

The new plates have similar slots but they start from a hole drilled at the root of the slot to prevent cracking in future.

I will post a You tube video once I get time to put together the videos I took while doing the job.

…Harrison's jackbooted authoritarian streak comes to the surface, brutally making 187-year-old Jill Archer accept a caution for assault with a deadly flapjack.

Not at all. This is just the start.

The Archer's onlty makes sense when you realise that Jill is 'Boss' of the Borchester Cosa Nostra.

Many mysterious deaths and comings and goings are down toJill and her criminal empire. She bumped off Grace. She was the brains behind the great mail-van robbery and smuggled Nelson Gabriel out of the country when the heist went sour. Later. when Nelson threatened to talk, she used her cartel contacts in South America to have him rubbed out. Mark Hebden, Caroline, Freda, Dan, John, Nigel and Sid all died suddenly to Jill's advantage. It was Jill who set the Russian Mafia on Matt Crawford. It's Jill who supplies guns to the Horrobins. Jazzer, Rob and Tom Forrest are soldiers. After a hit went wrong Jill got Tom off on a manslaughter charge. Jazzer fed Betty Tucker to the pigs: no-one really believes she moved to New Zealand. Some think he did the same to Debbie and Ed Grundy. Rob flooded Ambridge for the Insurance. Jazzer, Ed, Alastair Lloyd and and Kenton run drugs and gambling. Kenton's Antique Shop was a front for receiving stolen goods. For many years Kenton ran the Triad end of the operation, the Merchant Navy being cover for smuggling most of Europe's herion. Nobody talks about what grows in the polytunnels. Jill uses the Archer Businesses and Brian Aldridge to launder drug money on a large scale.

How has Jill got away with all this for so long? She is deep undercover for the Security Service: eveyone knows that Pru Forrest is 'M' .

                                                      Never listen to it myself….
