I've spent the last couple of days cleaning up an old gate for someone I know

It was made of cast iron from the 1920s and had some horrendous scale and rust and about 20 coats of paint

I took it on as a "restoration" type experiment since it was an original feature from the house build, but it really looked like it should be condemned and replaced

Anyhoo, after a bit of work it got repainted and looked passable (would take about a week, with car body filler, to make it look 'good'  ) and the oscillating saw was fantastic, making all the nightmare bits of thick paint, scale and rust relatively easy to remove

So if you come across an "impossible to save job" consider an oscillating saw for all that chipping and scraping work, they really are quite amazing

I take it you didn't actually use a saw blade for the job. Did you have some sort of wire brush attachment?

It has a standard scraper attachment. Made light work of a crappy job, cutting through the thick rust and paint

Works sideyways too, like a chipping hammer on tough scale

When I first bought it I wondered if it would ever be useful, silly me

(Edit: I worked all afternoon til 5pm in the blazing hot sun too, not so easy at my age)

Haha I've got one of these Bosch power chisels. Mainly intended for wood carving but comes with a carbide edged scraper which is great for cleaning flat surfaces. One of my work colleagues was good enough to assess the effectiveness of all of the chisels (not just the scraper) at removing ceramic floor tiles from concrete flooring. I won't be using it for wood carving again but perhaps it might still be up to a rusty old gate.

Final results of my camera butchery. Other people's experience suggests I may get as much as 30 degrees C of cooling.

How much shake do you get from the fan?

                    regards Martin

None I can detect. I avoided ball bearing ones and luckily found a 'hydrostatic' one that fitted the heatsink and its effectively silent and vibration free

                    > I expect the hands frozen to the camera at -30 degrees cancel it out

Funnily enough the inside of the camera only drops by 6-8 degrees, but the sensor is probably dropping 25-30 degrees.

On my trial I had big condensation problems – expected as I was only putting about 0.2 watts into the front glass heater, I've supped this to 0.25 watts which most people find about right, but I could go up to 0.5 watts.

A previous owner of our house had had the great idea of using wall tiles on the floor of their brand new kitchen extension in the 1980's. They used a good floor tile adhesive. The glaze rapidly wore through, so they put quarry tiles on top, again with a good adhesive. We wanted something warmer to stand on that didn't smash plates when you dropped them, so I got the removal job.

I used a hammer & bolster & got the quarry tiles up easily. The wall tiles were another matter. It took 30 minutes with a hammer & chisel for a 4"x4" tile, slowly pulverizing the tile. I ended up buying an Argos special SDS hammer drill with roto-stop & a set of chisels. Took a further 4 hours to reduce the remainder of the tiles to powder. Very satisfying job, but I'd love to strangle the little so&so who thought it'd be a good idea to use wall tiles on the floor.

                      Regards,

                      Richard.

You were lucky the floor tiles were not porcelain, they are about as hard as you can get.

Don't remind me. I have 2 layers of floor tiles to lift in the kitchen, to be followed by laying new floor tiles in both this and the new (adjoining) dining room, total area must be a bit over 25 m2. Obviously I will be buying the biggest possible tiles I can find. For the first stage I have an SDS drill that will be used as a power chisel and a Big Mutt in case that doesn't work….

A bit off to one side here, I want to lift some carpet tiles that are stuck to Vinyl. I seem to remember they used a carpet adhesive in a spray can. What have members used to get the adhesive off the vinyl tiles?

Have started to take honey off the bees, took two boxes on Tuesday uncapped and spun out and bottled all in one day. This year for a change they were able to work the Blackberry and the honey tastes very nice and has a beautiful fragrance.about another 5 boxes to go yet.

Brakes: we recommend you use Dot 4 fluid

Same for washer bottle and radiator, they give a suitable spec.

But the prize is right at the top of the list:

"Engine Oil: We recommend you use oil"

I guess Olive Oil would be best for a Fiat?

                                  Gentlemen,

For the last ten days I have blitzed my garage and returned it to a workshop, I've still got a window assembly to repair and a bench to clear but after at least five trips to the local tip to dispose of anything and everything I'm nearly there. Today I have had to teach myself a new discipline, having recently retired I no longer have the use of a transit sized van so as I'm off to Ducklington Vintage rally this weekend and I've had to get all of my camping equipment etc into the back of my recently purchased Forester including a portable fridge, stove etc. The engine is strapped into my trailer.

                                      Ah that brings back memories!

We have an "upside – down" house with the living rooms and kitchen upstairs and bedrooms down stairs. The kitchen was floored with ceramic tiles and we had two Staffies who slept in there at night. We soon found that an alarm clock was not required – as soon as the dogs woke up it was like the Household Cavalry on manoeuvres going on above our heads! This situation was resolved by bringing the dogs downstairs…. We have a high bed ( 1metre +) off the floor so we put their beds under our bed and all went well…….. except that in the night they would jump up onto the bed and lie on top of the duvet pinioning us to the bed!!

That situation too has now resolved itself – our latest dog ( see my avatar ) is related to the original pair and she comes downstairs at night…. but has her bed in the utility room which suits her – and us – very well!

I chiseled those ceramic tiles off the kitchen floor – every one broke and in some cases I was getting off small pieces about 12mm x 12 mm grrrrrrrrr! I got the local flooring guys to come. They laid hardboard all over the floor and nailed it down firmly before laying a heavy duty vinyl flooring sheet over it. Fantastic – problem solved!

I have used citrus oil to remove these gummy types of glue in the past. It works by breaking down the glue and its adhesion.

You need to cover the glue with a thin coating of the oil and leave it to work for a while (don't rush it) and then it should wipe off – paper towel is a good option here. A couple of goes may be required for stubborn patches. It should not damage the vinyl but will leave it slippery until thoroughly washed off.

It is available under various names from the cleaning section of hardware stores or supermarkets.

Made 6 or 7 threaded inserts on my new (to me!) Schaublin 70 Turret lathe. Yes I know I could have bought them, but the only ones I've seen are brass, I wanted Al. Alloy. Anyway, it took about an hour to set the turret up, with the appropriate strokes, and about 2 minutes each to make the inserts. The longest operation was drilling the hole for an M3 thread. Parted the last one off at about 2,500rpm, which was a bit of a revelation!!

Funnily enough I was thinking only yesterday that we hadn't heard from Windy lately, and hoped he was OK.

And here he is – hope everything is proceeding well Windy.

And my sweet peas are looking and smelling great just now. smiley

Finally got rid of all the NVQ training notes that I'd accumulated over 25 years ago when I was Mech Eng. NVQ L2/3 instructor at a training centre in my area. Blinking heck the amount of photocopied / handwritten text, handouts, OHP's, ref books, assessor forms, I/V documents that was stored in my loft was no body's business, why I kept them this long ??… todays teaching is all electronic portfolios & Google etc. ref. Ah well more space to put something else in.

Nice bike and a fun photo! Looking closely I think I can see 4 people in the picture. Is that right?

Lovely garden behind the taps too. When it comes to beauty treatments, I find putty hides the damage better than Orange Swarfega.
