Too hot for the workshop today – bright sunshine and 28 degrees this morning here on the Moray Firth in the north of Scotland. Can anyone beat that?

Er, yes. Day in, day out.

I got the call from the Vet to pick up the Airedale and duly went down and was given sheets of paper and pills for her, then to get her in the boot of the Passat. She was a bit woozy but totally aware.

First thing was a pee out the back, she must have been holding it as she took a long time to clear.

They supplied three tins of High electrolyte dog food, so i gave a small portion and she settled down. In the cool of the evening she was out on the grass zooming about as if nothing happened.

A short walk this morning when I am ready and as she is still on three meals a day she will be ravenous by 1200 hrs.

Clive,  I have added two pics.

George, you have summed that up exactly, she has to date destroyed two door mats, chewed the corners of a carpet. Eaten her way through the middle of an ornamental hedge and ate ALL the stems and figs off the fig tree. Also eaten two letters so far, I have a cage on the letter box now.

She eats clover off the lawn and any emerging plant is not safe. Now she is up on her hind legs eating green plums off the plum tree.

Wednesday last week she suddenly crossed from my left to right and tipped me over which resulted in me hitting the pavement and sustaining a laceration on my left hand and my glasses gouging into my eyebrow and under the eye orbit, lots of blood and a passer by called an ambo. so i had to wait 30 minutes for it to come. They did not bother with the cuts but did a heart lead test (OK) and BP and asked lots of questions. Obviously my BP was up and I have had delayed shock symptoms.

A new pair of glasses £350. as the plastic lenses were gouged by the gravel.

She Tess is the fourth Airedale in my life, the first I had when I was 7 during the war years. Then 2 more as I served in the army and then this one.

Clive, I still love her and boy does she roar when she barks.

We looked after our daughter's male doberman for a bit – about 18 months old. He ate anything, disposable razors (Which he passed without problems), soap, opened the fridge and ate 2 big blocks of cheese, a pack of camembert – box and all, swung on the coat hooks until they broke and chewed jackets, fishing rods and an air gun butt. Chased after a lady on a bike, bit her bum and punctured a tyre (She was a deaf mute and it took some explaining)! Would charge at you and try to bowl you over. I would "walk" him on a bike for 2 hours a day to try to wear him out so he would sleep – without much success. Dogs, you just love em !

Friday actually. Thought I'd suss out a couple of possible stockholders and in the process acquire some 1" x 5" bar stock (or metric equivalent), perhaps 1m or so and a short length of 4" dia. On a good day I'd also get to rummage through a cut-offs bin.

There's a local-ish steel stockholder in Preston that proclaims "your steel cut while you wait – trade or public – call into your local depot". The helpful guy behind the desk said they had a minimum length of 6m – or 7.5m in some cases. They wanted to avoid ending up with offcuts. Asked him what they were on about with the public / cutting lark and he said they would happily cut off a piece for you – but would have to charge for the whole length. I suggested not many members of the public or even small businesses would have call for such long lengths and he said "I might be making a trailer or something". Right. With 1" x 5" and 4" round. What a clown.

The other candidate didn't answer his phone for 2 days and when I called in the business was locked up. Perhaps he had been too.

I guess I'll be doing this job at a later date.

The "rules" at my local steel stockholder seem to be as follows. If the material is bright drawn then a length less than the standard (~3-4m) is charged close to proportional with a full length. Having said that, for anything much under 2" or so you might as well buy the whole length, as it'll come in handy. For hot rolled steel anything less that the full length (~6m) is more expensive than the full length. That's why I have a good selection of hot rolled steel.

That Suffolk 75G engine will go on for years after the ally chassis has disintegrated. When I started work, one of those engines cost £21.00, the whole mower cost £19.19.6 ! When you added up all the spare parts it came to over £40!!

Nice work on the mower. I think we scrapped something similar from the cricket club graveyard over the winter. I've got a Punch from the early '60s in the shed. I'd like to get back to using a reel mower on the lawn but will need a lot of rolling and tlc first. My latest rotary B&S motor has an all plastic carb devoid of adjusting screws but they have gone back to the float style after years of the nicely self contained carb over fuel tank design. Funny thing about the cricket club is people are always offering their old mowers that 'just need a little attention' – 2 more appeared this spring.

Having the same name as John, I was really sad to hear this. I used to work at Television Centre and many times our paths crossed even though I was in tv engineering. It was not unknown that occasionally John's trophies for the exploits he got up to for Blue Peter would end up on my desk! Incidentally he sometimes received invoices that should have been mine.

A really nice bloke and sadly missed.
