      Hi All,

I`ve just bought a Deckel FP1 milling machine from 1964, this was an impulse buy and it came with a large cabinet of accessories.

The sump had not been cleaned out for many years so I started to clean it out using the siphoning device but the fine swarf in the oil clogged up the non return valve so that I had to resort to spooning the oil out with a sauce ladle.

The oil has the consistency of black slime with jelly and is very unpleasant. The sump goes all the way under the base and cannot be cleaned out properly from the two access holes.

Has anyone any ideas of how I can clean out the remnants in the sump.

      Alan

        Hi there, Alan,

Could you insert some packing under the rear of the machine and then insert the hose from a wallpaper steamer through the access holes?

Maybe do a test first to see if steam heat renders the 'gunge' fluid enough to drain to the front.

        Best regards,

        Swarf, Mostly!

I;ve cracked 1.2mm (I think). . .24 on spindle meshing with 60 on shaft with a 38 which drives a 36 into the 2:1 leadscrew gear box. Ten turns on the chuck is 12mm -+ .00 on a reasonabley priced (cheap) digital vernier.

I have looked at calculating other ratios, I think 1mm is 20,60,38,36. Like 1.2 but lead screw is rotating 20% slower, hence change from 24 to 20 as the spindle gear. In the same vein, 1.5mm should be 30+60+38+36.

.8mm and ,7 are inscrutable at the moment, 1.25 needs a 25 tooth gear which I have not got.

          Frank

Should that not be a 36 driving the 38?

          24/60 = 0.4

          36/38 = 0.947

          0.2 x 0.947 x 0.5 = 0.1894 of a turn x 6.35 = 1.203

Went for pub lunch today (southern England)with my wife ,builders were working on old outbuilding, one on ridge refitting capping tiles ,one on scaffold with big disc cutter, cutting tile with loads of dust, third man painting new gable end timber with black paint (no priming),result dust all over paint and over customers and cars!!.I just could not believe what happened next, painter came down ladder ,paint pot was on ground, builder puts brush in paint and then goes back up ladder, paints a bit then comes down to refill his brush, does this several times,Where do these clowns come from?

Not sure why you thought that scenario was worth posting about, seems a very normal set of builders to me!

A few years ago I watched a highly skilled plumber putting holes in chipboard flooring (in what would eventually be the cylinder cupboard) with nothing more than a claw hammer. With the right weight hammer, swung 'properly' and aimed accurately at the hole position, a nice circular aperture is made to take the 15mm tubing.

I tried it and wasted a lot of chipboard before I made one hole, so I know it needs the skill of a plumber.

                Ian P

PS, I forgot to say the neat round hole was only on the top face, the underside flaked off to about five times the diameter

Hi, guide lines for working at heights can be found at **LINK** this is of course aimed at anyone being employed, or employing others. When working at home for yourself, you don't have to follow these guide lines, but it would be very prudent to do so, because ignoring these guidelines can lead to an accident that may cause a serious disability for the rest of your life or end it completely.

                  Regards Nick.

Bees again, I related the loss of Queen bees, so today I visited a very nice lady near Folkstone who breeds Queen bees. she has a set up that allows her to create Queens in mini hives and they can fly out and mate and she can then offer mated Queens for sale.

My trip down there was complicated by the Operation stack because of the Calais strike. Because of this I went via the M2 past Canterbury and followed signs to Folkstone, and saw a road sign to the place I wanted to go to so through all the country lanes so narrow the grass was brushing the side of the car. Met up with the lady and we exchanged cash for the Queen and I made my journey home, but this time back up the M20 as the Westbound road was clear of lorries. They said there were 13 miles of lorries but I reckon on nearly 20 miles of parked lorries 99% foreign.

Getting home I diverted to the Apiary and soon had the new Queen in her cage set up between the combs where the bees will slowly eat away the candy plug and release her, meanwhile accepting and taking Queen pheromone from her.

In a few days I will look in and see how she is.

Yesterday we visited my wife's 'old uncle Bern', a retired fitter of the old school. Sadly he is setting his afairs in order and generously gave me some of his old tools. A very personal bit of kit were his Snap-On 4" files, c1970 made by Nicholson, he used them every day of his working life but like him, they are still keen.

Then when I got home a new Grobet 8" #2 file had arrived. I shall definately be buying more of those thumbs up

Also today; "something crated this way comes" wink 2

It seems that if I want to clean the spouting around my house I'm OK, but if I want to do someone elses I'd need a scaffolding put up, same goes if I get someone else to do mine. Some of this is going to change, the NZ Govt has a committee, to get rid of some of the silly regulations.

The same thing is supposed to happen here in the UK. I don't believe one word of it. If you get rid of a regulation, a department of government will have to admit they were wrong in over-regulating. That sort of admission is completely impossible to expect of a Government employee, let alone a department.

A man in a bee suit comes along with a box and shakes the branch and the bees fall down into it and he places the box on the floor and waits until the bees go in the box.

The man in the bee suit then places a cloth over the bees and secures it and takes them away.

Then says, 'Thats £25, thank you'

The swarm 25ft up is a daunting collection, personally I would not attempt it. The bees might stay there for about 24 hrs or so and then depart. I will explain what happens. The swarm leaves the hive and settles and while settled the swarm sends out scout bees. These look for a suitable home which is roughly 18" x 18" x 18". If they find one they come back and do a wiggle dance telling the direction and how far away it is. This may seem strange but the bees having the information from several scout bees then decide which home is best and then depart to it. While hanging in a swarm they are not dangerous and should not be disturbed or sprayed with water or any pesticide. Let nature take its course and all will be well.
