My new lathe arrived. It will only run when I have the start button pressed. When I release the button it stops. The Warco faq says that it is due to the chuck guard and gear cover interlocks not closed but these are fine as the contactor energises when I operate the interlocks. Is there something silly that I’m overlooking?

          Hi Paul

I would have thought with any of the safety interlocks broken the spindle should not run at all, not even "inch" in any direction.

Do you have a forward reverse handle on the right hand side of the apron that moves the bottom rod to operate a switch? the 'start' button may just prime it.

edit: on a lot of these machines the emergency stop button gets it ready and puts power on the circuits but forward / reverse / off is selected by that lever on the apron. The go button on the headstock is just a jogging button not a master on.

              Hi Paul,

the start switch is a momentary jog switch so is working as intended. As Bazyle suggests to run continuously move the lever with the red ball knob, to the right of the carriage in the required direction (down for conventional forwards direction).

              Andrew.

Thanks Bayzle and Andrew thats all it was. Just proving to you all that that I am a real newbie. I’ll try not to suspect that there’s something wrong in future.
                Cheers.
