The system on which I am typing this has upgraded itself to the latest version of Microsoft's Edge browser.

No problem there as I believe in keeping a working system up to date.

However I have had to go into settings and make some changes from the default in order to maintain privacy and what devices I want it to synchronise with etc – Basically how I want to run it.

Before someone jumps in and says why do they have to disrupt things, the new version offers a far higher degree of customisation, which in my opinion looks to be useful – but I have just had to set things up before using the new system.

IMHO the upgrade and the increased options for security is worthwhile – but you must check it does what you want first.

I got a new work laptop recently which now has W10, Edge, but fortuneately still IE 11 aswell. Some setting are controlled by IT which makes it worse, like handling favourites and frequently used sites is worse. One plus is that some sites that were deliberately made to stop working with IE do work with Edge.
I gues you have to treat it like getting a new lathe – say having continuous speed control but no back gear who is to say which is better – it all depends on what you are doing so some plus some minus.

            Hi Bazyle –

I was looking to inform people who are already using Edge about the changes, not IE11 users. Your point about IE is a good one because several sites don't work well with IE11 and Microsoft have said there will not be an IE12 – so Edge is the way to go if you want to stay with Microsoft.

I have a work laptop, but I prefer to use one of my own for my stuff and keep the two separate – and in fact nowadays after 14 weeks of working from home I have set up another purely for Zoom as I am concerned with the acknowledged security issues with the software and I don't want to have an issue with my computer with personal information on it, or the work computer which I don't have the access to sort if it is disrupted, but the IT techs are not available due to lockdown.

I have had a beta of the new edge for months now and are not too pleased with the mass of adjustments that can be made to it. Some make difficulties where none existed before, such as my preference of not keeping any passwords and not being logged into anything when the browser is closed down. For security, I prefer to log in every time. I had been running the beta alongside the previous edge until this week when an "upgrade " killed off the old one.

My laptop and another pc have also had the new version added this week. I won't be syncing them with this new edge.

The average basic user will never be able to take advantage of the better security, while the setting up is so convoluted.

If you find IE11, the 'new' Edge or Chrome to intrusive or as I find way too many adverts, then there's always Firefox or Mozilla wink

                  Bah! Humbug!

24 hours to compile and build GCC

12 hours to compile and build glibc

24 hours to compile the X window system

                  18 hours to compile Mosaic.

Now you tell me I've got to upgrade it?

All timings were about the same on an HP9000 320 and a Sun 3/50, not surprising since they had very similar performance. Those were the days!
