I know you are all going to say "should have tried that first" . Well I am still a learner and reading the posting about a worm and helical gear in a bit about a someone called "Lathejack". This confirmed what I was already thinking so I took off the apron and replaced the helical gear (near the limits of my ability, needed my overhead crane to lift it off) Didn't need bearings fitting for the feed shaft as it already has them. Made no difference.

Prior to all this I had asked an engineer at a local precision engineers what it might be and he suggested it could be the spindle bearings needing adjusment. I had already looked at this and the nuts seemed to be adjusted up. Since the helical gear hadn't worked I went back to the spindle. I knocked round the first nut about 3/4 of a turn until the spindle became stiff to turn, then backed it off about 1/4 of a turn tightened the locknuts,Hey Presto! problem solved.

Thankyou all for your comments and I hope my experience is useful to others.
